3" don't need any room in the kick, mine didn't take up much useable room at all, and I can fit up to a 4.5" driver in there. I'd suggest that over 2-2" every time.

I use $10 midrange drivers. Implementation of drivers according to their strengths is EVERYTHING.

IMO, cutting down the brush so that the bristles are short & dab, dab, dab works great. If you have to glass a vertical or something fighting gravity, some spray glue will help keep the matt up.
