  1. I'm down for 4 of the 6's contact me. Sweet deal thanks for working on it! b
  2. WOW, great job, and that write up must have been updated each time you worked on it. I feel really incompetent now. how do the SoundSplinter 10's sound?
  3. bump because I actually tried to write a review
  4. how much room do you have? In my experience the vast majority of the time someone gives a ratio for sq and spl they really just mean 95% loud and that makes em happy. If you want something that just bangs like holy hell then get a pair of MTX 9500s in a ported box I've seen those moving like 4". Kicker L7's are loud too. The new alpine should be really loud. I own and RLP and its just great, the RLP is one of very few subs I would consider buying again (and this has more to do with SQ than anything). If you want loud you might want to try a diff type of enclosure, depending on what size reqs you have you can get a pair of 12's to absolutly crush. (this also depends on how good you are at building boxes) check out my latest post, it you put that in a car it would cross your eyes for sure!
  5. Yeah the option of glueing the last large pannel is not an option bc if I ever need to get to it again I would be up the creek. So I used a fairly thin foam that is 3/4" wide then run that all over the pannels then screw it to hell. My other box I built like that and it doesn't leak even with only 3 crews on the sealed section.
  6. I'll skip to how this box sounds since that is probably what most of you are wondering about. To initially demo the sub (kove armaggedon Z) I put it in a sealed 1.3 cubic foot box just to get a bearing on how it sounds. I'm using a nice dvd player, horrible receiver (I have no idea where the xover is set but it sounds high like 150) and a Tapco J2500 pro amp 2500wrms at 4ohm. I ran through my normal sound quality music at low levels to both break in the subs and just zero my ears to quite volumes. While playing Claude Chaloub's self title cd I noticed the sub seamed to peak in the 50's and 60's (which yes could be that sealed box) it also seamed to sound a bit dry in terms of blending into the rest of the system (to me this means that the distortion the sub produced was a noticibly higher than the actual note the sub was trying to reproduce (think JL audio distortion here). After a few songs from Chaloub I moved into Nickebacks latest cd which seams to be recorded better than most rock cd's I own and on track two there is this supper low note that just comes from nowhere (and with the Kove in the sealed box I could barely hear it) keep in mind this note is probably upper 20's. The note on this song absolutely slams on my Imaged Dynamics in a Transmission line but it is not loud in any sealed box set up I have). The kickdrums on Nickleback sounded great and really punchy (maybe helped by the super stuff suspension) but they had far more distortion than I am accustomed to when listending to my RLp or my Max. The Kove's don't like to go to low but the suspension seams to be able to keep everthing in line in both freeair testing as well as sealed box frequency sweeps. Moveing on to the Wicked One -No matter how good the design of the box (which I honestly think WO's are amazing) you are never really going to overcome a mediore speaker in terms of SQ. SPL out of this thing is fairly impressive, when I stand outside of my house (1000sqft) the entire thing rattles iike the trunk of a honda. Since I built this box to just hammer during parties it should work fine but I wouldn't consider listening to it at any length in my own environment. My other WO with much better sq drivers (ads 3 series) sounds worlds better and I'm not even done with tweaking it. The 8's easily go as low but they are not as loud (nor do they have as much distortion). If you put your head in the port of the Kove's at low fq's it parts your hair and blurs your vision, I can't do it without squinting my eyes. merry xmas b
  7. It's very likely that the new system won't be as loud but all in all it should be loud by its own right. I've heard the D3's and they're great for the money (not retail but ebay). If you really need more than two ported twelves you are always going to think your old system was louder (even it that was 15 systems ago) becuase you'll be losing hearing faster than you buy bigger speakers. If you want loud you might want to experiment with different box designs asside from sealed or ported. I've been doing that lately and I'll never go with a sealed or ported box again if I have the room for something else (which typically is freaking huge). Check my posts for the Max in the T-line and the pair of 8's in a WO (honestly they sound like a pair of 12's and they're in a open room of 2000sqft.) later, b check my new post for the latest big box
  8. Since it might wind up getting a bit of mosture I would def go with an aluminum cone and rubber surround. For 100 bucks you can get a kappa perfect (they're really efficient as well). diamond D3 series for that price too either of those are really good subs for the price, both of which I've had personal exp with. good luck and you might want to cover the box in resin (I did that to mine and it's impervious to water)
  9. So I've read that rather lengthly post over at SIN regarding some of the misconceptions regarding moving mass in relation to sound quality. For the most part the article mentioned that inductance is a far better indicator of potential sound quality than moving mass. (My understanding of inductance being the amount of power that is stored in the vc before it actually uses it) therefor lower number of inductance should indicate superior performance. With this said, how does the RL-P stand up (keep in mind this isn't a bashing post, I've had an RL-P since march and I love it) and what is the difference between lossy inductance and (the other one). The RL-P's inductance numbers seem quite high in comp to other dirvers, could this be the way that inductane is measured (hot vs cold coil) amp power? frequency? The vast majority of companies that offer main stream products don't even mention inductance, so I'm trying to compare the Rlp to other high end drivers from companies like adire, ascendant, RE, etc. here is that link http://forum.carstereos.org/showthread.php?t=56659 and what is the acutally moving mass of an rlp 12" since the magnets were added to the cone to test (and doesn't this throw off the whole test anyway?) Confused yet really interested, Bryan
  10. I'm guessing you've tried turning all your settings to a neutral position (you don't have bass boost on do you?) or LOUD setting. Check your amp and crossover, I had a similar instance where I couldn't figure out why the box sounded difffernt and it turns out I accidently pushed a xover button on my amp without knowing it. polyfill should help
  11. I would guess that if anyone from this forum actually bought an RLS we would see a post about it. And did anyone in the ring even try the normal recs for the enclosure. I remember people just throwing it in ported boxes they already had. If this is the case then most of us really don't know what it would sound like. 600 burning in my hand
  12. One of my concerns has been mentioned before and I'd like to find out from adire if the stamped basket can really do 28mm. Not that I really need 28mm but if I'm paying for something as advertised then I kind of expect it. I'm sure that it will be plenty loud anyway, but I would like to know. thanks, b
  13. Well I just picked up two of them so I hope they are what you guys estimated (or at lease worth the price). They are going into a WO, I'll be a while puting this together since it is 10 degrees outside now.
  14. I was looking at subs at Partsexpress and I saw this. I didn't know who the original manufacturer was but I was hoping you guys might be able to guess. Does parts express have a good reputation (as in, was this really a 550 sub?) My guess would be maybe one the earliest Brahmas, but who knows. Maybe an early HCCA by orion. thanks, b http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cf...tnumber=299-660
  15. Sealed Qtc of .7 happens at 10cuft. Ported.....you don't want to know....LOL Logo? If someone wants to design something I can stop by my local graphics shop and see what it would cost to cut some of them out. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'd like to thank squeak for all his work on this. I was reviewing the posts and I don't recall seeing if the basket is cast or stamped (I'm guessing stamped at that price). The logo might be cool for some but I would like to keep it off of mine if I get one. If they are adhesive that shouldn't be a prob but if it were an adire put on logo then I guess I would have no choice. Are you going to link this to SIN, if you do I think that you could easily pick up the remaining numbers you need (and what is that number by the way) I'm trying to talk my friend into a pair. later, b
  16. Hello, After hearing a few of my recent builds a friend of mine wants me to build him a subsystem with a price right around 1k (not including labor) so here are a few combos I thought of. Amp Adire ada 1200 (1200wrms at 4ohm) Tapco J2500 (2500wrms at 4ohm) Subs The new 15" RLS (one) a pair of RLP 15's or 12 A single SSA adire made 18 8 RE 8's on sale! I don't have much more than 10 cubic feet to work with. He listens to rock mostly. large room, gothic rocker looking house. I was thinking a pair of rlp 12s in a wicked one with this african mask mounted in the front with red lit eyes would be sweet. He has lots of skeletons and gargoyles in his house. go ahead and get creative I'm thinking something with lighting and dark looking, later, b
  17. Hello, I have nothing against RE but I don't have any personal exp with them. I have an SS rlp and it's sweet but it doesn't put out and like abuse like my IDmax. I think 2 nice twelves like you're looking at I think should be fine. Personally I'd rather have one nice sub than two cheaper but less quality (this saves you space and often sounds better). I heard a single XXX 12 hit 140 on legal mic this summer. Good 12's in my opinion, Sound splinter RLP, Image Dynamics IDmax, Diamond Audio D6, Adire (all of their stuff is good just pick a price point), Crystal makes killer stuff. PS you do know what RE's sale is going on starting dec 6th right? if not let me know and I can direct you. later, b
  18. Just my .02 Why are you trying to stay with a PR design? Maybe I haven't heard many good ones but they usually have really high group delay. It could be very true that I've only heard bad PR designs. For the price of 2 RLP's did you not consider getting the RLS? But with your amp I could see how that might not work well. If you wind up strapping those rlp's with some good plate amps you should be happy. Was using your original box a major factor in your build? If so I guess that answers many of my questions. later, b
  19. By those stats it looks great, esp. the sensitivity I hardly ever see subs upwards or high 80's. 94 is freakin sick. I'm supprised they're going with the good motor for that price. All and all I think it looks like a pretty sweet deal. I'm wondering how they got the sens that high with xbl, most of their xbl stuff has pretty low sens. later, b when do you need a definite confirmation on ordering one? I'm interested!
  20. Unfortunatly I can't take any credit for the design of this box (but Decware.com can) I only take credit for 12 hours of labor building the thing. Keep in mind this is for a HT Those are a pair of a/d/s/ 3 series, sweet little drivers but I'd like to see some RLI's in there. First impressions of build: WAY harder to build than anyother box I've done so far. But seeing how this is my 5 or sixth box (ever) depending on how you count, I'm not doing too bad. Freaking rad design, I nod my head to the guys over at decware. How does it sound, well pretty good, I only had a few mins with it this morning before work. I'm not sure it is as accurate as possible but that could very well be my build or the driver/box combo. But as far as taking an advanced generic design it worked rather well. Its really loud for a pair of 8's with 7mm of xmax. I doesn't keep up with my IDmax in the T-line but its probably just as accurate. I had my max running at 8ohm so 1400watts and these 8's are wired to 4ohm so somewhere around 2500wrms. I have the sub level around 3/4 on the receiver (supposedly 4v output!) and at about 2/3 gain on the amp. More later, anyone have good ideas on finishing (veneer, marble, Etc.?) later, b
  21. man, with 4 or those it would be hard to make that anything but hella loud. As far as volume, SS seem to be pretty right on as far as their normal recs so if you follow that you should be okay. I'd love to see pics of the install and box if you have any. I think you could even slug the box a little and still be fine. Many people say 2.5 cubes ported is great. later, b
  22. Just my .02 I've never used second skin but it looks like a better product (and idea in general) than the other tar based damping products. I put 200sq feet in a 2door bmw and it help an huge amount. When you are looking at tar based product try to find out the total weight not just sq ft. The weight is a better indicator of how thick it will be (and people tend not to over inflate their weight stats like they do thickness) I bought 200sq ft off of ebay for 110 and it weighed about 80 pounds total. Self adhesive back, it works fine. It smelled like the tar pits for about 2 weeks then a little bit each time it got hot out. But I've had it in for over a year now and there hasn't been a smell in 10 months. good luck, and get a small roller for really pressing it in there (wooden, often called wall paper roller) I put up to 10 layers on the wheel wells and at least 4 everywhere else. later, b
  23. I'm wondering about woofer position in relation to TL's. the enclosure I made (the first few pics) the woof is mounted in the front and the port is in the front too. In 95stroked his is similar but one less bend. If I put the sub in like his was in, but in my enclosure (if i build another one) (mosty for a car so the sub is protected) would the waves cancel or anything like that. I just don't know. I think the 3 bend idea with a port in the position like95's would be sweet for a car. later, b
  24. Yeah, a sealed box in a trunk is like 4th order bandpass (boomy) and a ported box in a trunk is like a really weird 6th order bandpass. and IB is like a sealed box in a house. good work any pics
