The shop tried talking his brother ( the guy with the focal utopia's ) into a new pair of audiobling imoortals. Told him they were 10 times louder , and sound a bajillion times better than the "flea market subs" he has now.

If your comparison is a pair of subs starving for air in a tiny enclosure vs. the same pair of subs in a bandpass . Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which will be louder to the ear with less power .

I now realize why best buy sells so many freaking bandpass boxes.
