If you want to be good I think arc (stick) welding is the best way to start. It allows you to really understand how to move the puddle and control heat. After that the MIG is easy and then you could step up to TIG eventually if needed Oxy-acetylene will REALLY teach you to weld.

For your tractor? Yep, amazing machines. Rated at 28hp and I've seen one exceed 3500ft lbs at 250rpm. Sometimes technology takes a step back. Plus gotta love something you have to fuel with a fire you build! Sweet. Time for a road trip up to MN, steam tractors are so cool. There are around 80 full traction engines up at WMSTR. At least another 15 mini's, a couple steam shovels, a full size steam train, a 1/8th size steam train, steam hammer, the Pabst brewery engine, a 20' flywheel corliss engine, and WAY more steam stuff but this is getting long. Ultra cool. Who knows maybe the tractor I'll find will be in KS. Either way once I get it a trip during labor day for the show is sweet.

My dad has a monster steam whistle off an old train, can't wait to install it

That is freaken sweet Sean! I grew up on my grandparents farm playing on them! I love the old hit and miss sound. Best sounding combustion engine ever is the old Hart Parr's.

    Only a single piston.

Especially when I lie and tell them a boiler is something completely different.

So yeah, normal tractor things. Spinning a threshing machine, connecting to a sawmill, pulling a plow, driving in a parade.

This might be a stupid question, but what will you do with it? Just use it like any other modern tractor? LOL. I'd store it here: http://www.rollag.com/index.php and run it for four days a year during the show. Have some stellar memories growing up there spending time with my father and I'd like that to continue both with him and my children.

I've had my Boilers license in MN since 1991, but haven't used it in 5 years. I'd like to solve that and figure its time to own instead of beg.

Narrowed it down. Looking for a 28hp Minneapolis. Fucking missed out on one by a few weeks

They didn't move at all. No production here or at least I doubt there will be soon.

Mechanics aren't usually temperature dependent....at least not away from where the state changes. Back to this, since I missed it; am I wrong in assuming resonant frequency changes with temperature, or is it simply negligible unless state changes as well? Wait, I think that's too general a question. Material would also be another variable correct? With or near a state change, sure. IE, when metal starts to turn into liquid all the parameters change. Outside of the transition range it is pretty stable.

Mechanics aren't usually temperature dependent....at least not away from where the state changes. I was just trying to make a point that it only takes one variable to change. They can do all the engineering they want, but until they get real world data, they can never be 100% certain of anything. Something as large as heat soak could affect it, and something as small as a rock stuck in an out of balance tire could affect it as well. Actually no it couldn't. The resonance of the fuel rail can only be affected by geometry or material change. Exactly my point. While in motion, you have vibration and harmonics from everything else, metal expansion and contraction, worn bushings causing excess flex, broken springs causing metal twist etc. . . All this affects geometry, no? There's no way to pool all the variables, especially wear, and throw them in a computer and engineer for every one of them. I should have put the word static in front of the geometry. None of that will affect the modal response or resonance of the system. *and yes, temperature can but only when extreme enough to change material properties

Not sure. Thought about calling Aura's head designer to find out, but figured I should look on the internet first Those are the Mobile Reference drivers. They came out along with the originals but were tailored for automotive use. I remember auditioning a pair of these roughly 10-12 years ago, but could not justify spending $1K on a driver. IIRC, these were the first $1K retail driver in the automotive world. The specs are within uncertainty/repeatability of the NS drivers. Makes me want to buy a pair as I actually really like the way they look. Grill them most of the time with speaker fabric and then BAM take the grills off. If I had $400 to blow, there would be a pair vibrating my sac right now. I don't really have a need for them and have plenty of drivers that will do more or less what they will BUT I want them anyways. Guess who just happens to be looking for drivers? Are they on a sale or just reg pricing? Sale. Not sure they are geared for what you want. Can get crazy when driven like anyone on SMD would do. (assumes they are like the NS). As for the situation, sale price. One of two things though. Either these are on sale and new old stock or these are re-issues now being built by the Chinese company that bought Aura last year. If they are new old stock I'd expect them to be sweet, Chinese remakes might be fine as well but I bet the variance between the drivers will be much higher.
  21. Huh? Stop being so complicated. Not sure why you are trying to disprove Ohm's law. Voltage = Sqrt ( Power/Impedance) This will always hold true for any solitary coil. To keep it simple, just look at that coil. When you apply Z watts to a coil of X impedance it will have Y volts. Whether the coil sees power from one amp or two if the same overall Z watts are applied to that coil then the voltage will be the same. Considering the voltage is the same and the coil didn't change then at that coil the current is the same as well.
  22. Umm, not at all what I said. What about this setup: MB Quart Ref 6.25 MB Quart Onyx 4.80 Diamond D3 10 Kicker ZX1000.1 Would you like to improve and why. Without that info it is really hard to make recommendations which you already saw as someone was asking you to take a step back...

If it were temperature dependent or related to other variables all FEA modeling software would have a serious bitch being useful at all. The problem that VW most likely had is that they made an approximation on the FE design and didn't verify it experimentally and OOPS oh shit, a mode is in the wrong spot. Probably even related to something the bean counters did to change suppliers or a supplier changed to their mold or so on. Plenty of variables indeed, but ALL are related to material and geometry and nothing else.
