Considering what you get Outlaw is cheap and Sony is expensive. It is relative as a bit of money for a piece of crap versus a reasonable sum of money for a great piece.

Ha, I read 9000sqft and indeed that would be a HUGE room. It does sort of come down to your expectations, goals, and of course budget.

The drums you seek are all in the midbass; however, if you go that route I personally wouldn't use the 720 set with a set of monster mids as one of their major strengths is their midbass. If they aren't enough a complete rework is necessary. I do really like the 720 set, but for your needs I don't think they are the right choice. Once you get the drums you like, adding bass will be easy.

Why not a 12" ported? Perhaps you should start with your goals, space, budget, and amplifier and ask what to use. Personally I think an 12" Icon ported is probably a really good fit for your needs.

The KISS principle is right. Active has the potential to sound way worse than comps if not done properly of course if it is done well, you can really reap the rewards.
