  1. *cringes* Well, at least we know where you stand on the SQ/SPL thing. That's totally box dependent. I've seen both Mags and SX's do well in pure SPL installs, one may work better for your specific situation but that's something you'll have to see for yourself. To the OP, you are not looking for SQ at all. Stop pretending. As for your question, the one thing is for sure and that is you will have much better support from SI. RE is pretty much done in my book.
  2. I'd look into following advice when you are given it.
  3. I definitely wasn't trying to attack you, as not everyone in the world has access to a $350k scanning laser vibrometer. I happen to and thought once and for all we could actually compare the effectiveness of how the different materials work. In fact, I'd like to thank you for what you have done as by far it is the most useful piece of help for the enthusiast on the web when it comes to deadening. Regrettably while I can definitely test the damping characteristics, I can't test the adhesion. Leaving that out of the equation wouldn't be fair. I'd actually like to see some of the more standard humidity & temperature cycling tests the big 3 use on other parts but that would require a lab that I don't have at my disposal.
  4. Getting rid of the old is the hard part, the new goes together much better. Going to be a huge improvement Tom. Get ready for smiles!

When I built the box for my Rli8 it was in a .4cuft sealed getting 250w and my baffle was 1.5"mdf the rest of the box 3/4". Don't be shy with the wood.

Functionality wise though it can't be beat. Who cares if it has a funny menu system when it does what you need.

If you weren't keen on the stage it must be terrible in my book.

Just have to describe the scenario and say that you have been ignored since making payment. Your next step if it isn't resolved is to call the police. That ought to heat things up a bit.

Not bad to start with a stern call to his momma.
  11. The box has to match the sub, I don't care if you paid 10G's for it the wrong box will make anything sound like crap. Major crap. I would imagine most of your problem is the box in the first place.
  12. To make a point, I dare you to grab an uninformed noob off an audio site and let him set your gains by his ears in your car. See what happens. I guarantee you won't like it. Offering that as a valid solution is dangerous. Would you let me setup your car? I probably wouldn't like how you set up my car either. One more reason to DO IT YOURSELF, and NOT blindly trust a machine to tell you which direction to twist the knob. Your reading comprehension isn't so good. Read the first four words, "to make a point". It wasn't a recommendation, it was only meant to make you think about your recommendation of doing it all by ear. As I said earlier, I don't disagree with the method but with the fact that you are recommending it blindly. To an average person or untrained ear it can be a really, really stupid way of setting gains.

    Where is he located?
  14. Well in the box design realm they are at the opposite extremes. You don't really choose between them but where in between, but there is a direct trade off. You do need a different box no matter what you do.

    Maturity at its finest.
  16. You need to address Jim's comments first. You are asking for SQ on one hand and then completely not on the other. What is it, do you want a loud sub or one that blends with your front stage.

  19. Your caps lock isn't satisfying to me. Out of your list, there are only 2 you should be serious about the Si Mag and the Q. Currently it isn't possible to buy a Mag so that leaves the Q.

I responded. I am in your corner, for the average d00d the oscilloscope is the way to go.

Maybe he will tell me to come down to his neck of the woods so he can kick my ass again. E-thugery at its best. I don't think he'd like it much if I showed up though.

He seems to think about a lot of things, and regrettably he comments. It is just too bad that his idea of thinking is egurgitating some crap that he read somewhere that isn't right. I am scared he is going to mislead some noob. I hate people like that.
  24. For the non-oscilloscope crowd, it isn't that I don't agree but I think that your impressions of the capability of most ears that come on to forums asking for help is way off. I bet that the average new poster couldn't tell 30% distortion playing through their sub (on music of course) and am sure that 15% on the fronts would be lost on them as well. You also have to remember that the average human ear can't tell the difference if it is within 3dB either. The other advantage of course at looking at your waveform is that it is pretty intuitive what is going on, when a noob doesn't they would hear something a little funny but it would be louder so they will choose louder. If you doubt me, go ahead and rethink auditioning speakers. I guarantee that as long as you are listening to comparable drivers a/b you will pick the louder one as the one you like better. (I realize that this is too general for the educated as the different sonic signatures of different driver types might flavor you, so amuse me and use it to compare two similar drivers). Again I am making generalizations for the masses, not for specific ones on here.
