Welcome to the IHoP
My list was not in any order, nor is it a list of my favorite guitarists just the ones that I think have outstanding chops and can play anything. I do like most of them though.

Surprising to me you guys haven't heard McLaughlin: Here is a quick recording he did with Santana: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...341790983&BAB=E My memory says Phenomenon might show some of his chops And a tribute album to Jimi, recorded with Buddy Miles. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...341790983&BAB=E

Only problem with Clapton is too much coke, by the time he left Cream behind his playing was already on a downward slide.

Mclaughlin plays all types of music, if you enjoy overly in your face guitar you might like him. Started out making himself known for playing music with Miles Davis--they defined free jazz pretty much which is the basis for all jam band rock. Then moved to fusion, rock, classical, combinations of all the above you name it. He can pretty much listen to any solo about three times that any of the guys on your list has ever played and then play it note for note without the hiccups that they might have had. The guys has insane chops. It doesn't mean I like all of his albums though.

Ever listen to yngwie malmsteen ? Dude started playing classical guitar at the age of three Never heard em, I myself played classical guitar for 12 years. Teaches you around the fretboard and music, thats for sure.

Welcome to the IHoP
Problem is in the real list of top 5 not a single one plays rock--all jazz. Srv's original band " Stevie ray vaughn and the cobras" did play some jazz. And quite well I might add True, but names like: Wes Montgomery John McLaughlin Paco de Lucia Django Reinhart Joe Pass Grant Green Barney Kessel Trump the rock genre. Jimi I have the ultimate respect for though, his music was the most original of its time and if he wouldn't have died he probably could have developed into being on that list.

Or classical which I left off because other than Segovia I don't really know any.
