That lens will KILL your kit lens. For a kit yours is sweet, but it sucks compared to real glass. The Tamron isn't as sharp as the Canon/Tokina, but $300 talked down to $250 is rather free. I LOVE my Tokina 11-16. Definitely as sharp and clean as anything I've seen. On a Nikon it even works on full frames and I have a colleague who has taken some seriously stellar shots with it.

No on both accounts. You can't take 2" from one side and add it to another. The internal volume (LxWxH) needs to stay the same. And there is no "rule of thumb" for port area. Absolute fail there. You already know the port area though from the recommended enclosure. If you aren't going to model, use that amount of area.
