Classis we made a POS was not drivetrain related, just a question regarding this drivetrain. Generically my beef with GM is not due to engines. Personal experience has led to my uniformed blip a very small subsection of cars, but when a Chevy Silverado has a cost of ownership that is nearly 10x that of a BMW M5 in the same number of miles of ownership it sours you rather quickly. All dinky shit that never should fail that went too. Truck was immaculate when I bought it with full service records at a dealer and even pro-active services added.

That is usually even worse. New budget stuff lasts about 5-10 years if you are lucky.
  3. You've heard wrong. He's running them to be different, because he was misled, or because he is confused. Same with pretty much 99% of people running them.

Only the ecotec turbo 4 it seems. Is it a wreck from a longevity standpoint or just a classic GM oops we made a POS? Interior wise or powertrain? Looking only at the new ones, not the previous gen. That is what I was pushing them to as well. My Great Aunt has this wild hair that says NO USED cars since my mother would never buy new and she wants the best for my mom. Hard to argue with a 90 year old, but that then limits the MSRP of the new car to under $40. She'd probably spring for more, but my mom won't have it. Otherwise we'd add the Volvo XC60 to the list. Has to be new, Chrysler/Dodge scrapped all their crossover vehicles. Thanks, not a problem my mom is diligent and I take care of insuring it. Appreciate the heads up though. Not actually surprised from interacting with their engineering. Exactly why I am interested in your perspective. I can deal with determining fit, but I always buy a few year old car at least and this is a different ball game. Wish we had some of Europe's TDI's but since we don't it's to the drawing board with what we do have.

Update as I blew a couple hours just sitting in cars: Ford Escape - It fits, but barely Hyundai Santa Fe - for the money seems like a hell of a buy. Having dual power seats is a huge bonus Hyundai Tucson - too small Kia Sorrento - seemed cheap compared to the Santa Fe Kia Sportage - CRAP VW Tiguan - super teeny Nav screen. Nice seats and layout. Buick Encore - not available for another week Toyota Rav4 - too small Honda CRV - piece of shit Subaru Tribeca - not available Ford Edge - seems long in the tooth and I am sure will be updated soon So, Escape, Tiguan, Sante Fe, or Encore I think. Going to setup drives for next weekend to compare.

Of those options I like the Rav4 and the Santa Fe/Sorrento. The SF and Sorrento are the same vehicle, but the SF has a better resale. Honestly, Hyundai/Kia has really stepped it up over the past several years. The Rav4 is solid. I like Buicks, but the Enclave is based on the 3.4/3.5/3.9 Chevy driveline. It is OK, but it is not really a Buick. Rav4 is too small. I can't fit in it at all. Any thoughts on the Buick Encore? Not out yet which scares me.

I would not buy the Ford or Kia if they are concerned about resale value. Concern is more keeping it 10 years than resale. They won't flip. Poor and someone is giving them a car. They'll drive it. Cost of ownership is more important.

In that size/style.... the Acadia is one AWESOME little go getter. The 2 I have been in were at least. Without GM, I like the escape in general and if it comes with Sync it would be pretty awesome. I don't know anything about 6'7 headroom but I always feel claustrophobic in most SUV's that size. Acadia & Enclave are too huge. Won't fit in their garage.

Out of your list, my mother has a Tribeca and loves it and my mil has an Escape 2011 and has had no issues with it. Subbie discontinued the Tribeca, only sold 300 last year according to the dealer.

My Great Aunt wants to buy my mom a new car. Can't be used. Can't be much bigger than an Escape. Ford Escape, Hyundai Santa Fe, VW Tiguan, Buick Encore, Toyota Rav4, Honda CRV, Subaru Tribeca, Kia Sorrento Yikes, nothing I know anything about. Any lemons or mechanically better? Mom is 71 but wants nav, bluetooth, dual power seats (dad is 6'7"), safe, reliable, and not a complete pooch. Great Aunt is pro Ford and I'm anti-GM, but the most logical buy is the one we should pursue. Any thoughts?

And by default if you buy barely after moving into an area it'll be a flip. No way, no how can you learn a new city that fast and end up with what you want. Sure, I tend to over shop but I don't make bad decisions and considering that this is single handedly the biggest purchase you've ever made spending some time shopping is a no brainer.

Do you buy a home just for short term gain? Who cares what happens to the value of your main home if you are still living there. NEVER buy a main home as a short term investment. Do you get a tax benefit as a renter? You still have to pay utilities as a renter. Taxes are different in differing locales. That is one reason I love where I live. My annual taxes are under $600. If you rent a house you usually have to maintain the yard as well. $100 a month for yard maintenance and snow removal is absurd. Really, with regards to general home maintenance, we spend less then $100 a year. This year we did get our ass kicked as out AC took a shit and our well got struck by lightning. But I have been a home owner for 20 years, and have never taken a bath like that before. Home ownership is a responsibility every man who is financially able should partake. It is obvious to me that Mike's career will allow him to be able to easily afford this responsibility. Yikes, $600?? Mine are more than 15x that. Every 20 years there is a given. New roof -$5k-50k, new appliances $5k-$50k, new windows, $5k-50k, new furnace, $2k-5k, new water heater/treatment etc $500-$8k, bathroom remodel $5k-50k (per bathroom). Then you add in the insecurity of buying in an area where you may not know what is desirable and you can end up really upside down. My house is down over $400k from it's initial asking price. Neighbors house is even worse and it sold for it's asking price. Thank god in my case I offered 55% and basically got it otherwise I'd be fucked. The way it is when I sell it's a wash with throwing $1500/mo into a rental. And that is only because I am crafty and have HOURS into making it nicer. Jumping into the biggest financial game changer of your life quickly is the dumbest thing you can possibly do. There is a time and place to buy a house. Just be aware what that is.

Umm, NO! WAY too early. With the market as such doing so this fast is a recipe for losing money. If you haven't looked at 100+ houses in the area you don't know it. Seriously. Feel free to find me a rental property that doesn't cost more than a mortgage and is worth a damn. Additionally the house we are looking at we will likely get for only 5-10K more than it sold for in 2001 and in that time it went through a complete renovation. New plumbing, wiring, gas, 2 gas fireplaces, all walls torn down, new insulation, remodelled kitchen w/ granite and new appliances, new heater, new double paned windows, etc... Price per month has nothing to do with it if you lose a ton on the way out. He is losing by paying rent. If he already owned a house I would agree, but paying rent is paying someone else's mortgage. A $ not gained is a $ lost. Not really knowing what area and place you are buying in is a terrible deal almost always. I didn't say don't buy a house. Goal is to look at enough to make sure it is the right one.

Stefan just want to put one perspective out there. As with anything in typed format it is easy to read what you like into the text. That being said, I am encouraging you to read everyone's comments not as trying to call you out, but instead as constructive. Right or wrong the only reason anyone is bringing anything up is because they want to help. Of course, helping without knowing the full picture doesn't always end up being help. ie, no one wants you to take it as personal and I think everyone is actually encouraged by how you have put the "box" aside and are chasing your goal. Everyone on here is impressed by that and should be as it is the key to success. Chase on!

Perfect postlude to my Mexico story. You choose your own perils in life. Some are of course given to you but you can surely alter them.
