Title says pretty much everything. What would produce the best sound given enough power is present. I have heard that more low xmax drivers will produce less distortion, any truth to that?

It's all going to depend on where the coil is within the gap. Displacement is key in an IB application, and I believe that with the 4 woofers versus two, you have a displacement advantage. I'm too lazy to do all the numbers with cone area and excusion taken into effect, but even then it will only show you the POTENTIAL, not actual displacement.

i put them into winisd and it seemed that the 4 mj's had the advantage. But theres always something im forgetting...

Unless the IXL's have MUCH more Xsus than the MJ18's do, go with the MJ18's. The more cone area the better IMO.

Indeed.

I wouldn't trust WinISD numbers much, as soon as you start cutting drywall the results are going to be different :)

There's no replacement for displacement. The 4 MJ-18's will displace more than two IXL's, but keep in mind that the low end cutoff on the MJ's will be sooner given their higher Fs. This means more EQing on your part to achieve the ultra lows. If you have the right EQ and enough power, it should not be a problem.

Have you checked out the Cult for any information?

Best,

I have been all over the cult but have not been able to find many builds with this driver. Has anyone heard how good this is in an ib?

Are you referring to the MJ-18? There are a lot of folks who use the MJ in IB configs with success. The IXL is new so you won't see many (if at all) right now. A number of IBers took part in the pre-order and are currently working on getting them built.

Perhaps check the Cult periodically. I'm sure someone will post their thoughts...

ive decided on the mj18's. Would an ep1500 (1400W) be enough to power these or do I need the extra in the ep2500 (2400W). I was under the impression ib subs do not need as much power but I dont want underpower them.

Might actually be too much. General consensus is a halving of power when mounted infinite, BUT, it will all depend on how much true volume the drivers are seeing. Just keep in mind, thermal power handling is now out the window as the only thing controlling the driver(s) is the suspension and motor force.

I had been intending on wiring these up to a 2 ohm load (4 8ohm subs) for the amplifier but i just realized that it needs a 4 ohm bridged to get the most power. Any ideas? Would this effect my needing an ep2500?

Anyone get the 18 in IB yet? I was looking through posts for comments. I have 4 12s running now IB into my seat for mostly SQ but loud sometimes....I like 30Hz that is why I put 4 subs in. I have run IB a lot and try to use as many as possible but then I don't use that great of subs either. When they get moving a lot the quality seems to go down with the drivers I have used so more has been better to limit travel. Anyway, maybe at some point I would swap the 4 12s to two 15 or 1-2 18 and save even more space/weight in the car if the output was good. These 4 12s are fairly heavy in this little car. 18 does have higher Fs....I wonder about it. It can be hard to eq out if it has a steep curve and I don't have a fancy eq. I think my trunk is around 14cf.

My dvc 4+4 ohm 12s are wired at 2ohms, I think that is only way aside from 8 unless you go 2ch.

The IXL-15's are coming soon. Perhaps they will work better for you...
