I plan to upgrade my alternator. Currently my alternator is rated at 60 amps (I know...) and plan to upgrade maybe twice the size (minimum of 100 amps) for daily. I dont need high power alternator as I am not competing... well maybe 1 or 2 comps doesnt hurt.

My question is, is there a risk of upgrading to a bigger alternator??? Do i just swap it, make a bracket for the new alternator? Or do I really need to install 2nd battery for that. Reason being is that I was told by the shop that if you upgrade to a big alternator.. it will fried all your electrical components in your car as its capable to put out more current than the stock alternator.

I understand about alternator has an internal regulator and it only put out what is needed. But is there is other risk that I was not aware of?? The last thing I need is catching fire in my car.

i never heard of that happening lol my last car i up graded the alt and never had any problems i plan on getting a 200 amp alt. for my galant without an extra battery

Some people are completely clueless as to what really happens with an alternator.

You're right about the regulator, besides.. amps won't fry the car's electrical (the car only uses what it needs). If the Regulator goes haywire and sends 18+ volts through the system.. that can cause problems.

If you are going to spend the money anyway, You should look into at least maybe getting a 160A or bigger. A 100A is still not a very powerful Alt. What setup will you be running? You dont even have to make a new bracket. If you buy an Alt. specific for your car, it will just bolt in place of your stock one. And a bigger alt. will in no way hurt anything in your car. Good luck.
