With my new job, I've decided it's finally time to upgrade to what I've wanted for a while now -- a small/medium sized SUV. I'm looking at either '96+ blazers or '99+ cherokees (if I can find one cheap), although I'm open to suggestions. Anybody have experience with either of these vehicles? Any other suggestions for something similar? Budget is most likely $7,000 max so too new is out of the question.

my dad just snagged a 99 cherokee with 125k on it for under 3500, in really good shape too.

i like those.

You really have plenty of options in that price range. I just scored a 99 'hoe that i absolutely love. You could probably find that gen for 6-8k loaded.

You could look at a 4 runner (i will probably be selling my hoe for a 99-01 limited in a while, might be a bit out of your budget, but you could always go with a slightly earlier SR5 model)

Pathfinder/Q35 (iirc)

Out of the options mentioned i would shy away from the blazer. They're not bad vehicles, but the interior quality is rubbish.

What about a second generation Ford Explorer? Like a '95 to a '01?

I'm a Chevy guy ^_^

I'm not too worried about the interior as it only needs to last a few years before the vehicle most likely gets turned into a dedicated wheeler. I like that the blazer averages about 18 mpg, because I drive about 55 miles round trip to work.
