Posted November 5, 200717 yr I think I'm hearing tinsel slap on my 15" Dayton Titanic, but I'm not sure. Does it sound like something is scratching on the inside of the cone? If I apply pressure to the cone, it stops making this scratching noise.Thanks!-Trevor
November 5, 200717 yr tinsel slap can be heard like someone holding a popsicle stick above the cone and when the sub excursions it hits the stick causing a slapping noise... If this "scratching" is heard at low volumes or high volumes with little movement on the cone then i would say it isn't tinsel slap and that it probably is something else (maybe the coil is warped and is scratching and is sitting of center in the gap of the sub)
November 6, 200717 yr Author Hmm, could be a warped coil. I was wanging that sub pretty hard. Any way to check this?
November 6, 200717 yr TAKE THE SUB OUT AND PLAY IT FREE AIR sorry caps lock was on. while the sub is playing take a look at the cone/tinsel. if the tinsel is hitting the cone, then its slap. if you get some scratching, i think you might need a recone....or turn the gains down.
November 6, 200717 yr i had a similar problem with my brahma...it was a scratchy squeek...lol if that makes sense...my problem was a glue failure at the triple joint...mine wasn't bad so i was able to repair it...you could have a similar problem or it could be tinsel slap...i've seen a lot of high excusion subwoofers ues the felt pads...maybe if you have tinsel slap, you could put those on...or like flakko said...turn the gains down a bit and resist your urge to bump
November 7, 200717 yr Lead slap...stick your fingernail just above the drivers cone while its moving, when the cone hits your fingernail thats basically what it sounds like.who the crap puts popsicle sticks on their subs ?
November 7, 200717 yr Author Someone who likes arts & crafts mebbe. Thanks, i'll try and take the driver out later.
