Does the crossover in a component speaker system affect the way the mid-bass woofer plays?

Reason I ask is because I'm currently using only the mid-bass driver of a component system and it doesnt seem like the speaker is playing as good as it did when the crossover was in use.

I assume you're running it actively now?

The low pass point & slope is probably different than it was originally, levels may have changed, etc. That's why crossover points aren't an automatic thing, it takes time to tune everything so the drivers work well with each other and the vehicle :)

Sorry I'm not totally sure yet what running a speaker actively means

Active means electronic crossovers in the signal chain prior to the amplification.

then yes they are running active but only because of the crappy HU LPF, the passive crossovers must have a bandpass filter cause the woofers dont sound nearly as good now

are you using a tweeter with them?

yes i'm using the factory 15 watt tweeter

Did you make sure the internal crossovers on the amp, if it has any, are bypassed?

I'm using the HU crossovers but the external amp im using has no HP filters, so yes they are bypassed.

By not sounding as good what is it doing differently?

They're lacking the clarity and definition that I heard when I was using the passive crossovers.

Is everything else in the signal path the same?

No, there is a different but to my understanding comparible HU and a not so stellar amp.

Old HU: 2003/4 alpine it was like $300

New HU: Kenwood X591 $160

Old Amp: Eclipse EA3422 $300~

New Amp: Old Kenwood free

You replaced a great headunit with a crap one and a good amp with a junky piece. The difference you are hearing is all in those changes.

yes the amp is a serious downgrade

but as far as the HU goes I thought they were pretty comparible considering the specs (4v preouts, 110db s/n ratio, .004 thd etc etc etc) i know the price difference is alot but considering the advance of technology in the past few years i assumed they should be comparible, maybe i was wrong
