I'm in the market for a sub but not sure if I need to buy a dual 1 ohm or dual 2 ohms voice coil. Furthermore, how should I wire it in series or parallel. What are the pros/cons of a D1 vs a D2? Then what are the pros/cons of wiring up the coils in series vs parallel? I'll be running a 12" sub with a Soundstream Rubicon 702 which does 700 watts RMS X 1 at 2 and 4 ohms bridged. Also does 350W X 1 at 8 ohms bridged.

you basically just wire the sub to match your amp. If you have a 2 ohm optimized amp and have a sub with dual 4 ohm coils, you'll wire the coils in parallel to the amp. Conversely, if you have a 4 ohm amp and a dual 2 ohm sub, you would wire the coils in series.

I try to wire in parallel if possible but it's not a big deal to wire in series. Really not much difference.

D1 vs D2 doesn't affect performance to the point of it being noticeable to the ear, if any at all, everything else being the same. series vs parallel, same answer, to a point. once one gets into huge multipule sub setups that might change, but not to my knowledge.

as mentioned, you choose to match your amp, to optimize it's performance.

i always try to series the coils, it's easier to keep track of, lol.

Yeah I've heard that's best too. There is some technical jargon for why but I forget. Wiring coils in series/parallel does make a difference in Le I believe (series has higher Le). But I wouldn't change everything else up just for that.

Back EMF distortion is the term. The inductance and EMF generated by the moving coils of subs wired in series causes a change in the signal going to the other subs in the series. Wiring individual subs in parallel allows the amp to act as a shunt for this.

So for my amp which works at full power 700W at 2 and 4 ohms bridged I should aim for a D2 wired in series since 4 ohms is easier on the amp than 2 ohms.
