Posted July 5, 200817 yr I can get a 2500 watt inverter for $100, but really don't think I need that beast in my truck just to power a few hard drives and computers. I can get a 500watt inverter for $35 but it might have a lighter adapter instead of terminals. Can I cut the wire to a lighter adapter and directly connect it to a battery terminal?
July 5, 200817 yr I don't see any problem with that. But (desktop) computers draw quite a bit of juice, you'd better make sure that 500 watts is enough. If its a laptop you're talking about, then 500w should be enough.
July 18, 200817 yr Guess it depends on the desktop. I've never built one with less than a 250w powersupply. That would indicate to me that you would need over 300w on the invertor to make sure that you can adequately power any peripherals.
July 18, 200817 yr Haha, I guess my computers aren't the norm. My computer now has four power hungry hard drives. Yummy! 580 watt power supply supplies the energetic electrons!
