Question 1) I might be purchasing a used Magnum and wanted information on its Power Handling. Does Stereo Integrity offer such information?

Question 2) If I wire only one voice coil and terminate the second coil with a resistor (potentiometer) to vary the driver's Q in a sealed box, how much power can I send to one voice coil?

2) as a general rule, most people will halve the power handling for just one coil.. but i've found that you can usually put a little more in as there isnt so much heat build up

Power handling is cut in half if you only use one coil. We might supply a little more information when the new drivers come out, but the basket and coil size are going to remain the same so power handling will be pretty much dead-on what it is rated at now.

For instance, 600 watts from a JBL 1200 on one coil will make the coil smell bad and turn black with repeated heavy use (AKA: about to blow). Thankfully I got to the customer before he continued only using one coil and corrected the problem by hooking up both coils.

Could someone tell me what amount of power is required to push a Magnum 12" to full excursion in a sealed box. I need to choose an amp.

BTW, this PDF is very helpful. I recommend SI releases a similar document: http://www.adireaudio.com/Files/BrahmaPowerHandling.pdf

Depends on the size of the enclosure. And why would you want to go to full excursion anyways? When a driver is run to the limits, you always have the ever-present risk of damage.

Hammer: I'm in the same boat as you, but I have the Koda 8s to hold me over, even though I have yet to install anything. :D

I just want to know what size box and how much power I need for the Magnum to hit real low in a sealed box! I want to run my Magnum near full output, so I can use the sub without damaging it. If I don't know it's limits, then the risks of me damaging the sub are only greater.

QUESTIONS:

1.) What size of a sealed box does the 12" Magnum (CLAW) need for 0.707 alignment?

2.) How much power is needed to reach full excursion in that box?

3.) Give the above information, how much power should I feed the sub?

For example, the 12" Brahma only needs 900W (it's RMS is 1600W) to reach full excursion in a 0.92 cu ft box that provides a 0.707 alignment.

Thanks a lot for the help guys!

That, I can't tell you. I don't have the measuring equipment to get that data, but I can tell you that if I plug that info into BassBox, it gives me a Q of .57 to .666 on the Brahma, depending on the amount of fill added. So you can clearly see how the only way you will get a definate answer is to contact Nick. Remember, once you load the driver/enclosure into a vehicle, everything is a different game.

I would suggest going with whatever SI has listed on the site for recommended enclosures. You won't be disappointed.

I might also like to add, that with your idea of altering the Q, you will need to know that whatever Nick recommends should be tossed out the window as the parameters have been changed by you and you will have to test/have tested the driver to find out the new parameters. This will be the only conclusive way to determine the enclsoure size and power handling. But like I said, it will all change once loaded into the vehicle.

Is there a specific reason you want to alter the Q? I myself find things like this useless. Why complicate something so simple. Will it yield better results? That's questionable as every ear is unique. Will there be any discernable difference? Please don't take offense to this as it is not meant to be that way. I just think it'd be easier to find a driver that will do what you want it to do right out of the box from the manufacturer. It's just simpler, and better off than trying to modify something IMO.

I know all about the Q. I was stating that I find it pointless. Just my OPINION though. I myself will pick my driversa based on the intended application, and I will get which ever one performs best in that app. No need to adjust the Q. That's what I'm getting at. It's abviously different in your case. SO I say give it a try and let us know the results. We're all eager to learn different things, and I think many would benefit from your experiment.
