Hello,

I'm in the process of redoing/upgrading my subwoofer setup, and I need some help pertaining to the amount of subs and box type.

I have a Sundown SAZ-1500d amplifier, 0 gauge wiring to it, and the big 3 upgraded.

I am being limited by space - I'm working with an area approximately 30" wide x 18" deep x 14.5" tall.

So, the way I see it I have two options - #1 - sealed box with (2) Fi SSD 12's w/ copper coils, or #2- a ported box ~2.25 cubes, tuned at 32hz, with a Fi Q 12. If it were possible, I would build a ported box to suit the (2) Fi SSD 12's, but I just don't think I have adequate room right now.

My questions are:

1.) which setup will sound better overall?

2.) which will have better low end?

3.) if i ended up using a sealed box, would there be a sifnificant benefit if I were to run (2) Fi Q's?

4.) which would have a higher SPL?

Thanks in advance,

Ken

First of all, 1500 would not work well with that Q, most people on here would disagree with me, but the BL would take that 1500 and smack you in the face with it in the right enclosure. Go easy on the bass knob and gains too.

Thanks for the input!

I'm a little hesitant on the BL, simply because I perceive the BL as more of a specific SPL driver. I'm looking for something that's middle of the road and good for everyday use. I'm not looking to be the loudest on the block (nor the attention it brings) but I would like it decently loud yet still pretty clear.

Unfortunately I have neither heard nor seen either sub in person, so I have to go off what others are telling me.

Head unit is a Kenwood DNX-7100.

I have 2 sets of Alpine Type-R 6.5" components up front, powered off a cheapo lanzar amp pushing ~75w rms iirc.

BTW the car is an 03 Eclipse. I'm eventually going to get another sundown amp for the front speakers, and probably new components too but that's money I haven't made yet.

The BL is the bridge between the all out SPL monster BTL and the Sound Quality driven Q.

im in the same bag, got bout 36w14h18d for my enclosure and a saz1500d for power. was thinking bout 3 10" svc 4ohm rl-i's. or maybe a top firing 15, or 2 12's. so many options! got bout $5-600 for woofers and enclosure.

im in the same bag, (still gotta get my 1/0 and big 3) just got my saz1500 today, i was thinking bout a top firing side port 15" that amp really puts out a lot of juice.

Funny thing is your questions aren't right.

1) You don't care, you want louder

2) You don't listen to music with lows anyways

3) Sealed isn't for you

4) Valid question, ding, ding, ding. BUY THE BL.

After thinking about it:

1) I do want louder, I just wanted reassurance it was going to sound alright.

2) 99% of the time you're probably right on this one

3) You're right.. Its time for a change - I have always used sealed boxes with relatively POS drivers (kicker comp vr's etc..) and frankly I'm tired of the same old thing.

4) You're Right again..

This is my first entry into serious car audio (obviously) so I have been a little hesitant. I have honestly been trying to avoid making such a noob-ish thread by searching/reading on here to find what I needed, but I felt I needed some personalized advice.

The next step for me is going to be designing and building a box. My construction skills are solid, but I have no f'ing clue how to properly design a ported box. I have been playing with the calculator a bit, but I'm still pretty much in the dark. So, needless to say, I'm going to be asking around for some help figuring out port size and length, etc.

///M5 is always right, I learned that the hard way too :)

SSA has some calculators on their site.

I apologize in advance for bumping a dead thread, but I just wanted to post some feedback on my new setup.

I went with a single Fi BL 12 D2 with cooling, flatwind, extreme leads, and universal options. After purchasing the speaker I built a double-baffled 2.3 cubic foot box tuned to 32hz for it. It took a while for me to get the setup in my car because I work 40+ hours a week, and I wasn't about to rush any part of the building phase. Finally last weekend I got her in, set the gains properly using a 50hz test tone and DMM, and went for a ride.

My initial impression at low volume (due to break-in period) was "this is kinda weak!".. Man was I wrong. When I finally got to crank it this weekend I was blown away. "Duran" said it best - The Fi BL took that 1500w and slapped me in the face with it. It has much more output and nearly identical SQ as the 12's I had in there. Right now I find myself wishing I had a larger car so I could fit a second BL/1500d.

Thanks for your guys' help.

I'm glad it worked out well for you ;)
