what are people getting into their doors ?

i dont mind some cutting and whatnot,

but i'm not looking to make a whole new door skin.

i had hoped to get a set of 6.5 comps and a mid base in the door.

the comps look easy enough ,

but where could i put the mid base ?

would it be bad to put the mid base in the back doors?

or under seats ?

any pics would go a long way for me.

I have a '98 and I fit 6.5" comps in the door fairly easily with a 3/4" mdf adapter ring. I don't know where you'd put midbasses without cutting up the door a lot. Maybe kick panels (put mid and tweet in kick and midbass in the door)? You could put them in the rear doors but it won't sound as good as you'd like.

You don't need a 6.5" midrange if you add a midbass driver. Just a little 3" would be fine. I'd put the midbass driver in the door and the midrange and tweeter in your kicks.

i didnt figure the mid bass would sound right in back doors.

where did you put your tweeters?

i'm not afraid to cut, but as i'm sure you have seen

there is realy not much left to cut that is not covered up by seat , dash or door mechanicals. {power windows/lock mtr}

thats what i figured, but wanted to avoid.

kicks in my suv would get beat to death.

how bad is it going to sound if the kicks are not turnd upward,

but just pointed toward the tranny ?{bad i'm sure}

and i dont think i have enough depth in the doors for most midbass drivers,

so thats why i was going to move the midbass rather than the mid/tweet.

when i saw this explorer i thought to my self,

wow look at all this room to work with for sound system.

my jeep cherokee was better to work with.

Yeah I HAD to have the 3/4" spacer for my JL XR mids in my doors or else they wouldn't fit. So the wood became multifunctional, both for additional depth as well as changing speaker hole size.

My tweeters are on the little panel by the front of the windows. Not the A-pillar, but the thing on the inside of the mirrors. You just have to be careful about how you mount it on there, because if you mount the tweeter too far forward you won't be able to close the door. So if you put them there, make sure to align the tweeter with the door closed. I just drilled three small holes into that panel to mount the tweeter. One for the screw to mount it and one for each of the + and - wires. So it's not flush mounted, but works. You could probably flush mount them in the door panels right above the mid, but that would obviously require cutting holes into the door panels. I went the route I did for a less invasive procedure.

If you wanted to cut your door panel, you may be able to get some midbasses to fit a little further back from the midrange in the factory location. I have a map holder pocket in the way on my door, but maybe you don't. Or you could even sorta mount the midbass inside the map holder. Imaging for the midbass is not as important as the midrange and tweeter, so it's ok if you kinda cover it up with the seat. Just an option.

as for kicks pointing inwards instead of angled up, I'd think it would work ok. Might not sound as good as kicks, but if you think about it, your factory locations are pointing straight in as well, and the kicks would only be 12" away from that, so shouldn't be a huge difference. But if you place the tweeter down there it may be quite a different sound than if you put it up by the mirror like I have.

i already put mdf pannles where the stock speakers went for some temp comps.

i think i have my tweeters in the same spot as you held on with putty for testing.

i have the map holder but thats not the problem,the powwer window motor unit is there.

also if i put the midbass driver behind the mid then it is playing into the seat.

i have a set of infinnity kappa comps for now but don't realy like them that much.

any sugestions

are there any comp set that wouldn't need a mid base{prob not}

or three way with 6.5-8" midbass that would still rock and a seald back 3-4" mid

that wont make me poor $$$

would it sound like poo to have midbass in stock loc half way up the door

then put 3-4" seald back driver just over that

and the tweeter up by the bottom corner of door window ?
