A friend of mine is trying to decide between a pair of Treo TSX 12s sealed or 2 JL Audio W3v3 13.5s sealed. He can get JL and Treo subs are very good prices. Either set will be powered off 700 watts. Which would get louder with that power sealed?

The JLs have an advantage in cone area which is important if output is the goal. Other than that it's impossible to tell which would be louder. There's really more to a stereo system than getting as loud as possible.

I'm aware of that. The reason I ask about which would get louder is I already know either would sound good sealed.

Why don't you figure it out? The JL's have 240 sq. in. of cone area, and the Treo's have 113 sq. in. I am not aware of the efficiency of either drivers, so i cannot tell you which will be louder.

For what you want, I wouldn't use either of those.

And why is that? Both are quality drivers.

Louder and sealed aren't things that generally go hand in hand.

Why not select one driver, and port it. For instance, the Fi Q or the SSA ICON.

IMO sealed boxes do get decently loud and sound better than ported. I feel that alot of detail is lost going ported unless your box is HUGE and tuned low. To me I'de rather get a smaller sealed box than a huge ported box to get the same detail. Plus, wouldn't 700 watts be underpowering the Icon or Fi Q?

Detail being lost is never the problem with a ported box that is designed correctly. If that is your only issue you should instead evaluate a real ported box.

700 watts underpowering? LOL. Not at all.

As I said, in order for a ported box to sound almost as good as a sealed box it has to be over sized and tuned low. When hasn't that been the case with ported applications? In order to go ported and sound right you have to sacrifice alot of space.

How so? Larger enclosure will lend itself to efficiency while sacrificing power handling. What do you consider a "low tune?" Tune too low and you have a very flat, obnoxious monster.
