Posted October 21, 200816 yr Having a sparatic issues with my remote voltage. Out of nowhere, I am having an issue with the amps/xm unit shutting off randomly. Turn the H/U off and it works again.Took out the DMM and found that Idle voltage is 12.4 and dips around 11.4 when the music is playing. Drove around for a few min and it did its thing again at which the voltage was around 5.5 and not sufficient to turn my amps on. I am running two amps, xm unit and SMALL low rpm fan on the remote circuit and have not had a problem for quite awhile...( I don't believe it is related to having too much stuff on the 12V remote) However....My H/U is over 3-4 years old Alpine 9827Thinking it has gone through its life cycle? Going to check for wiring issues in the daylight as well but I highly doubt it.Hopefully someone can shed some light!Another clue: Sunday, I ran into an issue with the xm unit turning off out of nowhere BUT everything else was fine...Seems like a problem started there and has gotten worse. Sounds like a H/U voltage problem that can't be fixed???
October 21, 200816 yr if u think its the remote, get a relay, go to 12volt.com and get a diagram of how it should be wired and wire everything to the relay, relay must be grounded and ran directly to the battery as well as the remote line will just be used to activate the relay.See if that fixes it.
October 21, 200816 yr xm radio amps and a fan... thats a big load.... either way put all that on a relay or on a switchable sorce from your car
October 21, 200816 yr Author xm radio amps and a fan... thats a big load.... either way put all that on a relay or on a switchable sorce from your carBut heres the weird thing. Ive been running the setup as is for over a month with no problems. But I am totally with the idea of using the relay.Thank you guys for chiming in!
October 21, 200816 yr Yeah definitely a relay. Most head units only support a maximum of 3 amplifiers on the remote lead. Sounds like you have at least two plus xm plus a fan, which I'm sure draws quite a bit of current.
October 21, 200816 yr Author Got the relay hooked up and working. However, I am getting 13.5V at the remote on the amp. Is this ok?
October 21, 200816 yr Author did you happn to fuse either end?? before the relay or after?I have to take a run to the parts store for a headlamp bulb and was going to get one.. What size am I looking at for two amps and a small fan? Xm unit is wired separately behind the dash.
October 21, 200816 yr you would have to find out the draw... i would just start out low 5amp fuse or so... and it it blows go higher.
