Posted December 18, 200816 yr Right now I have a RL-p12 powered by a JBL BP1200.1 in a 1.35 cube sealed box. I want to build a ported box just because I never have before and I'm ready for a change. I have a max of about 2 cubes to work with. Can anyone describe the difference in sound between a higher and lower tuned frequency?I'm a bit of a bass head that listens to a lot of really fast bass (metal w/ double bass, punk) and I love feeling the thud into my back every time the bass pedal hits. What frequency should I shoot for, or perhaps there's more to the equation that I should look at?
December 18, 200816 yr Is that two cubes for the sub, or 2 cubes for the sub and port? I'd say 32-34Hz would be a fine tuning frequency.
December 18, 200816 yr Author I have about 2 cubes under my seat (ext cab truck) pre sub/port. Could you describe what the difference in sound would be?
December 18, 200816 yr My enclosure is tuned at 32Hz for my 12 and it pounds with double kicks like crazy haha. Metal is sickanywhere 30-34Hz I would suggest
December 18, 200816 yr Author I'm also worried about how crisp it hits. Right now it's a little 'sloppy'. I hear some vibration coming from the sub like it's hitting and then the momentum is so great that it cant stop itself so it gets kind of sloppy...does that make sense?
December 19, 200816 yr Author The JBL's RMS is 1200 watts, so yes I have some head room but I'm only running it at about 1/2 - 2/3 gain.Yes it does kind of seem like a rattle but I'm using machine screws with T nuts so I would imagine it should be pretty secure in its down firing box. Sounds like you have some ideas though.
December 19, 200816 yr Sounds like a loose spider or something came apart, you should really look at your sub before its too late. Edited December 19, 200816 yr by Jason907
December 19, 200816 yr Author Alright well it's pouring rain right now so I'll have to head out and check things out once the storm passes. In the mean time, can anyone describe the audible difference between tuning a ported box at a low frequency (say 29 hz) vs a high frequency (like maybe 37-40 hz), vs the sound you would get from a sealed box.
December 19, 200816 yr The gain setting will not limit your amplifier output, you still could be using every watt that amp will make...The sound difference between sealed and ported is non-existant assuming both are aligned properly.A ported box has the potential to have more output for an octave or so below tuning vs a sealed box below resonance. As far as sound quality, you'll have about a 1000 opinions, and none of them really matter. You have to try and hear it for yourself....
