Posted March 18, 200916 yr So I bought some used DD 9917s off **** and apparently they were just reconed. Well, I had a box built for one of them just to try it out and I started to play it in the car and it wasn't exactly very loud and literally after a minute or so, the sub completely locked up.It was wired to two ohms @ 3000 watts which is pretty much nothing for a 9917.So, after that, I hook up the other one. I notice the strong smell of a burning sub after about 20 seconds of playing it loud then about 2 hours later it starts making a sound like a spring vibrating or something. This one isn't blown YET but I sense it's damaged. When I push down on it, I can feel it rubbing. Any of you guys have experience with something like this happening before?Heres some pictures of it that I took. Edited March 18, 200916 yr by SSaudio
March 18, 200916 yr perhaps a sloppy re cone job/Or maybe a sloppy install ? Give us more details on how you installed them, what kind of box, subsonic points...
March 18, 200916 yr http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Owners1/box-1.pngthat is a picture of the design. it's built to exact specDo we have to guess volumes and tuning ? Maybe somebody had some experience with 9917's and can figure out if the volume is ok for the power you have...but without some more info nobody can figure out exactly what happened. I remember reading about someone mechanically damaging an AQ HDC315 in one of Pete's designs. Too much volume for the power he had.You could take some pics of the subs after the damage, maybe that could give some clues.

March 18, 200916 yr Author I am not sure of the tuning.. the box is 11.42 cubes though. The pics that I posted are of the damaged sub. I sent the severely blown one to DD already but the one I didn't send yet doesn't appear to have anything wrong with it but it sounds good for maybe 5 or 6 seconds then it makes a real strange noise and I have to wait about 10 seconds and it does it again

March 18, 200916 yr On the second sub it kinda sounds like the coil is rubbing. Maybe it was a sloppy recone job? Give us all the info you got!

One (expensive) option is to have DD rebuild that sub and try it again. If the install is ok and it holds up, it was definately a bad recone job. If it doesn't hold up...that's the expensive part And you can point fingers at the install. Did you send DD them some specs of the design ?

Depending on what was wrong with it, I will decide the next course of action with my second one.. this kinda sucks. I blew my temporary subs too and now im out of bass lol
March 18, 200916 yr If it rubbing then the re-cone is off. And we can assume the other was the same way.

March 18, 200916 yr Author yeah and the fact that DD claims to not have anyone by his name on record.. kind of makes me suspicious. ill see what DD says though
March 18, 200916 yr yeah and the fact that DD claims to not have anyone by his name on record.. kind of makes me suspicious. ill see what DD says though After they tear it apart they should get a better clue of what happened exactly [off-topic]how wide is one of the boxes ? [/offtopic]
March 18, 200916 yr Looks like the re-cone was done poorly and the person that did the re-cone did not shim the coil in the gap properly. Causing the coils to rub against the pole. DD should take care of you .... For a price. PWK works closely with DD so I am sure his design would work with that series.
March 18, 200916 yr DD subs do smell some what....I would say it's more of a problem withthe recone alignment
March 18, 200916 yr How did you blow your temporary subs too? Are you deaf? It is rather easy to hear when a sub has reached a point of no longer being happy and is about to go. First things first you should evaluate what you are doing as it doesn't add up.

I hooked it up to .5 ohms which is about 7k on my amp and they are rated for 1k each.. go figure
