Currently I am Running a 15" Fi Q ported in a 4 Cu. Ft. box supposedly tuned to about 32-33hz and stock speakers in a 99' Volvo S70.

I am missing out on some hz's like above 60ish probably but i want some more lows... so what im thinking of doing is for now get some midbass speakers (or maybe even just some good 6.5's) so play from like 65-70hz up and leave the rest the same... then later replace my 15 with an 18" Q tuned at 28 and then bring the midbass down to like 60-65...? does this seem logical?

Also would a 18 Q in a 5 cu ft box work well or do i need to get closer to like 6 or 6.5

AA Carbon fiber mids would work great for that application. . .

I know you can run the 18 in 5 ft^3 NET, but I personally would want closer to 6-6.5 if it was me.

Also, say im looking for a speaker to be able to play like 60hz and up, should i look at the "Frequency Response" or the "Lowest Resonant Frequency"....... like with this pair of RE's:

http://www.woofersetc.com/p6873/RE65FR--RE...al-Speakers.htm

Im assuming it would be able to play notes from the frequency of 55-20,000hz, but then what is the 90hz (lowest resonant frequency) mean?

if you want more lows the q's love large boxes put the 15 in a 5cu tuned to 28hz the lower tuning will take up more space due to longer port. make sure you follow fi rec for port area. the lower tuning and larger box should really bring the lows to life. if your a rap listener id reccomend 5cu tuned to 32hz it should be louder and the larger box will give the lows a bit of a boost without losing to much of the upper hz tuning to 28 you might need to cross the mids as low as 50hz. if you do decide to buy an 18 pm me i have one in great shape basic model no cooling dual 2ohm i might let go.

okay so maybe just get mids crossed at like 60 or so and then get a new box around 5 cu ft @ 32hz and 80 sq inches of port??

and i wold think if yo want it to hit the lows better tune it to a high number like 30-35

maybe its my lack of knowledge but why would i tune it higher to hit lows??? im thinkin tune it 28-32hz... then get the mids to crossover at like 50-60hz

Perhaps you should re-evaluate the install on your current mids. Midbass is hugely a function of install. HUGELY.

everything is stock besides the sub, headunit, and amp for the sub....

all door speakers and rear shelfs are stock.

Then you don't need midbass speakers but components.

okay so maybe replace the fronts with some good 6.5s that can play down to 50-60hz area and above?? then go from there?

  • Author
Much better start. You really can't add a midbass to the stock crap and expect any results.

haha yeah good point... well now i need to figure out which components to try. any suggestions?

i found THESE THESE and THESE

I think the REs are at the bottom of the list... but both the MB Quarts and JLs look good but what do i know...

Any ideas? Comments? Advice? thanx again. idk what id do without this forum

I have no advice, but I'm in the same boat as you right now, hope to hear some good suggestions :)

okay well as far as audio goes there is only one store besides the everyday best buy and circuit city crap... and thats the place where i got my sub installed so idk if i can find something i want there... best they have is JL but most of JL's stuff is overpriced.. ill go check it out this weekend and hit you guys back.

another thing... been lookin at these Xcons.. all i can say is DAMMMMM!

anyways, how would an 18 Xcon compare to a Q in terms of Output, SoundQuality, and How well it does on the lows?
