I have 2 motors for MJ18's. I plan on reconing them when I get the money. If you were interested in something like that I could help you out. I think they need like a 10cu ft box.

I would probably be interested. How much do you think you could sell them for? And when would you be selling them, becuase I probably won't have the money until after summer break, if not later. I'm not sure that I would get this quite yet. Even though WinISD shows the MJ-18M having more SPL after 20 or so hertz, the Dayton 15" HF gets it below the 20hz range.

Thanks for the help

That would work. I won't have the money to recone them for a few weeks yet. I would have to think about a price, but probably around 100-125ish each. I'll figure it out after I pay for the recone and get it done. Just stay in touch with me if you're interested.

Ok, thanks for the offer. I will think about once I decide on what I will be doing. If I don't have the money when you are ready to sell them, feel free to go ahead and sell them. I don't want to hold you up any. How much would shipping be?

Thanks again.

I'm not sure. I'd have to weigh them after I recone them and figure it out.

My brother in law has 2 Kicker COMP 10" subs runnin off of a Kicker 200.1 amp in a single cab truck. When he plays Down 4 T h a Krown, the subs pick up the lows in the song really good. Would the Shiva-X, the Dayton 15" HF, or the GR Research sub with the Servo amp be able to pick up the lows as good as that?

Thanks

LOL, if that is what you call lows you have been deceiving us.

If that's what you have to compare them too, any one of those subs is going to blow your socks off! Like Sean said, what is it you call lows?

Haha, that would be sorta low, nothing like movies, I guess. So, the Shiva-X, Dayton 15" HF, or the Mach 5 MJ-18M will be able to match that or even better beat that in my room? I know that cars have a lot of gain, especially the single cab like my brother-in-laws'. I just want something that basically can beat how his Kickers do... :) because I really like how they sound....

Thanks for all of the help

Here is a graph of the 2 Kicker C10's, the Shiva-X, and the Mach 5 MJ-18M.

Clearly, all the others excell over the Kickers, but I don't know how much gain in SPL there would be from the single cab of his truck

Here is the cone excursion with eq's set so the driver is right below full excursion...except for on the Kicker...not needed

coneexcursion.jpg

Is that how you are supposed to set up the eq's and filters? I don't fully understand them yet...but I'm getting it

Thanks

I can honestly without any doubt say that I wouldn't put kickers in my HT even if you paid me.

It WILL NOT get you to the goal you mentioned earlier. To me it sounds like your goals are not what you stated. You keep mentioning SPL SPL SPL.

SPL at the level and hz you are talking about will be nothing in a room or a house especialy with an HT set up. If this is for movies and games you will be wasting your time with the kickers.

I'm going to be verry direct, but what is wrong with what was suggested? Why do you not like the idea of the shiva?

Perhaps I stated that wrong. Either you are flat our lying about your goals or really don't understand any of this. Kickers can be great drivers if used in their application, but this is very, very far from their best application. *assuming you are truly describing your goals which I don't think you are.

No, I wouldn't use the Kickers in HT either, I learned after my first post in this topic...

And, I really like what is suggested. I just wanted to see how the Kickers modeled, and if someone could tell me how much gain in SPL there would be from his single cab. Now, I just need to decide on which one to get: Shiva, Dayton, Mach 5.

I just can't decide which one would be better for my application of 60% music 35% games and 5% movies (I will be watching more movies over the summer so it will be like 60% music 25% games 15% movies)...I'm pretty sure it's the Shiva though.

Basically, my goals are for the sub to be better than my brother in law's truck. I have listened to it a lot, and really like the bass in it. I'm sorry if there was any confusion here, I didn't mean for there to be any.

I guess I can restate my goals...

I mostly want the sub to be able to get the lows in music, and hit pretty hard, if that is possible...I don't know much about subs, so I don't know if those are two opposite things...

Secondly, I want it to get stuff in games like explosions and whatever else is hidden in games because of my sub, becuase my current sub reallly likes to bottom itself out on stuff like that...

Thirdly, I want it to pick up lows in movies...the type of lows that you can feel...and of course hear also. I would also really like to not be able to bottom the sub out, if possible, becuase that is very annoying...

So, is the Shiva-X with the Bash 500w amp still the best driver choice for those goals?

Thanks and I apologize for any confusion...

Edit: dem beats What do you mean by the bold part? I'm not fully understanding it...

Thanks

To elaborate, most music (like the rap song mentioned) have their "lows" in the mid 30s to mid 40s hz. For those, you just want to tune your box to 30-35 hz. However, lows in movies and games are down in the teens. For that you most likely want a sealed box, or can sometimes get away with a ported box tuned to 15 hz or something. So as you can see, the desired box for one is not even close to the desired box for the other. And, for that matter, totally different subs are also normally desired for the two applications. The kickers may be ideal for the vehicle application because they like to play at 40-50 hz. But play them down at 12 hz and they'll be begging for mercy. However, put something designed for in-home use or at least have better parameters for such application, such as the Dayton, and you'll get much better results.

Also, it's pretty hard to compare subs in a vehicle to one in a house. In a vehicle you have cabin gain and a LOT less air to compress. Your home has none of this. Two 12s with 500 watts will always be louder in a vehicle than in home.

Ok. Now I see. I had already thought that some music was around 30 to 40 hz, but I wasn't sure.

Now, can I build a box for the Dayton or the Shiva, ported to the correct frequency, and plug the port when I am going to listen to music, if needed?

Thanks

No, the box won't be the right size for that and it wouldn't help.

You need to build it for the lows you are looking for. If that includes movies then you are going to give up output for music by tuning low.

The only way around that is multiple drivers.

Ok.

What do you think would be the ideal frequency to get the best out of music and movies? Like 20hz? Or lower?

Thanks for all of the help

You can't get the best out of BOTH music and movies.

If you tune for music and play movies you will destroy your sub without seriously using a heavy duty subsonic to knock all of the lows out of a movie.

If you tune for movies, you will lose a lot of output on music.

There is no best, just a compromise. Since you want games/movies though I'd be tuning in the 12-18Hz range.

Ok. Do games have pretty much the same frequencies as movies?

Thanks again

That depends on the budget, the application and the environment. The original request on another forum was for music, games and movies in a 13' x 13' room and a budget of $400. The Dayton RSS390HF-4 in 7 cu.ft. tuned to 18 hz with a Bash 300 amp would give him 112 db at 20 hz with room gain for games and movies. Plugging the ports would create a sealed sub with a Qtc of .664 for a tighter sounding bass for music. The best of both worlds within the budget stated.
