I read the sticky but I wanted to make sure I was correct, I have a alpine type r 10" dual 2 ohm sub and a kenwood KAC-9104D amp which is 500 watts rms @ 4 ohms.

So is it;

Voltage = sqrt(500 watts x 4 ohms) ?

500 watt amp and 500 watt woofa good match up but you still have to use your ears and turn it down if it sounds like crap.

500 watts at 4 ohms:

Power = (voltage^2)/impedance.

500 = (V^2)/4

V=sqrt(500*4)

V=44.7 volts

Ever turn the volume up higher than where you had everything set when you set the gain; did you increase the bass setting on the radio or turn the volume up past where you were when you set the gain?

What box is the sub in? Subs can be limited mechanically to a power lower than the thermal rating by box design . Did you smoke the coil or do mechanical damage?

Box is .75 sealed.

I used super glue and glued it back around, I am waiting a bit and going to see if it works.

You sure the SSF filter was set at 32? You sure the box design is correct?

You either had a manufacturer's defect, or you were killing it mechanically. How far would you guess the cone was moving (peak to peak stroke)?

My "Infrasonic filter" switch was set to 25hz. The speaker was used, and had been sitting around for awhile...if that helps. It did not seem like the cone was moving too violently according to what I have seen from a type r.

You may not realize but that amp is not capable of 500 watts if it isn't pulling on a solid 14.4 volts. Kenwood should rate at the more realistic voltages between 12 and 13. I'm gonna go on a limb and say 400 watts would be more accurate. Anything after that will be seeing a real ramp up in distortion. Something else, you stated the coils are dual 2 ohm. Did you wire them series or parallel? If you have parallel configuration (+ to + and - to - ) you should go for the low voltage of 22.36 volts. This amp is stated to be 1 ohm stable but it is a Kenwood so do so with caution.

If you followed that diagram then you are fine at 4 ohms. Now what is the Subs model number. I will check for background of problems and solutions for your surround. What size box is it in? Ported or sealed? Also if I were in your place I would set up that woofer at 40 volts thats 400 watts or check your voltage at the amps power terminals. Do so idle and when playing the sub. Get your voltages and write 'em down and we can go from there. I bet when you are pushing that amp you will see some drops unless you have upgraded the electrical system or put a capacitor in-line with your amp.

Something else comes to mind. What is your headunit? It can also create distortion if the RCA voltage out is over-driven and distorts.

SWR-1022D, .75 sealed, headunit is a pioneer DEH-P6900UB

Everything looks ok. Headunit is solid and the box is right on the money. As you have stated you have the sub-sonic filter on that driver can handle everything down low to it so that should be OK. As for the surround coming off - I have searched for reports and this is not a very common issue so no reports of defect or repairs were available. I think if the glue you put on is good and stout you will be fine. I do hope you didn't over do it though, or you will knock the sub out of whack. The cone is not heavy on subs and the additional weight will possibly hinder your driver and cause tilt. Best of luck.
