I have a jl 500/1 gains are supposed to be set at 31.6 v ac. I have tried two different decks at 3/4 volume with bass flat and with the gain turned all the way down Im getting 40 volts using 50hz signal at 0db. the sub 12w6 sounds loud with the test cd but barely audible with music. Is there anything obvious to look for?

From what I have found when adjusting with 0dB tones is that the sub doesn't sound too loud when playing music. Ever sinec that I always adjusted sub amps by ear. Either untill it's enough bass or untill it starts to sound distorted and back off a little.

I've always done it by ear as well.

Like Adrian and KU40 said is the best way to tune

But if you want to do it this way instead of using a 0db tone use a -10db tone. This tone is a lot closer to what actual music plays.
