Posted October 9, 200915 yr I was wondering how much of an audible difference more port area would make. For instance my 12 is in a 2 cu. ft box with 2X13 port area which is 26 sq. inches of port. Would a 3x13 port make it that much louder or is more port area just desirable for chasing tenths on the tl. More port means a bigger box but is it worth it? I know higher tuning will definitely make it louder but i don't compete so i would never tune above 35 hz. Or perhaps i need a bigger sub . I'm more of a basshead than i thought.
October 9, 200915 yr if i could with my current install, i like tuning just under 40hz and set the subsonic down in the low to mid 20s. Make sure you use a sub that has LONG throw so it can be set like that, otherwise, that sub will get damaged quick.to answer your question, no, you shouldnt hear a difference because the new port area is no where near a major change. You would, like u said, tell a difference by tuning higher before u would increasing port area just 13sqin larger. Now, if u increased port area from 26sqin to lets say 60-80sqin... well, that might be louder to the ear... but too hard to speculate.
October 10, 200915 yr Author Thanks for the reply. I don't think i would want that much port area for a 12 for my tuning habits because that's a big box. Is 24 mm xmax enough throw for your tuning suggestion? I have the Soundsplinter rlp-12.
October 10, 200915 yr i'm sure it is, that's practically 2" p2p linear excursion. You should be able to tune to around 35-37hz and still drop low. Of course the lower you tune, the lower and louder it will sound though.Preferrably though, lots of people like 35hz unless you are a low-end-fiend, then 30-32hz is suggested.
October 10, 200915 yr Author Cool. My box is already tuned to 32 hz and i was thinking of tuning just a little higher. Most music doesn't go that low but when it does, man is it fun.
