Install is the key though. Personally I am not a fan of Scott's drivers. Not that they don't sound good, but for the price I'd spend my money elsewhere. Note I am not at all knocking his install capabilities as he has proven those to the nth.

what Hybrids have you used? just curious as well, what cost less that in your opinion outperforms? I am looking to try some new mid-bass drivers for the doors, so I never mind trying new equipment. Just as far as midranges I have never found anything to touch my L4's :)

Used none, heard and compared a few. They all fit in niche's that compromise one set of performance for another. Depends on your install goals of course. How high do your midbass drivers have to play?

the Hybrid mid-bass are expensive, otherwise I would just pick them up. looking for a pair of 8's to cover from ~40- ~120, then two pairs of 6 1/2's to cover from ~50hz and have ability to play to 2khz. Right now my 4's are playing from 100hz and up thru 20khz, but after mid-bass in I plan on cutting them off around 160 on the low.

the 8's are so that I can turn everything else off and play just the three way set for SQ stuff, the 6 1/2's are really just to add volume when I'm doing demos and cranking it out, I need both drivers to play the above frequencies, but I don't plan on them actually all playing at the same time with over-lapping frequencies. I mean I'm sure I'll play around and see what happens, but I'm not counting on doing that. I will say I had two pair of 6 1/2's in my doors before, with 8's in the floor in front of the front seats, and they played same frequencies between ~60 up to 200, and I noticed no cancellation, sounded great, but now all in the doors together may be different story....

oh btw, I'm not necessarily looking for budget budget, I mean hybrids are 400 a pair for the 6's, and I do plan on getting them, just not in any hurry, anything less than 100 bucks a speaker to me is a great price!

realistically I won't want to spend more than 80-90 a piece on the 8's, and no more than 60-70 a piece on the 6 1/2's. if it's slightly more or less, that's fine, but right now looking for something in that price range. and yeh, if I was to experiment with something along same price as hybrids, I would choose scanspeak, or dynaudio...or DLS...or rainbow....many others, yeh yeh yeh but just naming those few.

thanks for moving the post BTW I did feel bad for jacking that thread.

I have looked at those peerless before, I will most likely try their 8's, and I know it's odd, but want to try something different for the 6 1/2's. After system is done, I will save up for L8's and L6's from hybrid probably next summer, but until then figure I will try a few others.

Mate of mine is running a pair of Polk 8" subs as midbass (and before you say it I know what your thinking!!!!!!) 160hz down to roll off and they are very impressive. Especially for the price. He did a bucket load of research before buying them and like you is saving for a set of L8's or similar. Cheapish over on Amazon.com (for example)

Not a traditional driver but a left field one that might be of interest. He is using them semi-IB in the kicks vented behind the guards.

Its the db840 above.....

the 8's are there for the third part of the 3-way SQ setup. the 6 1/2's are there to add volume when I crank up the subs. I am contemplating changing up the doors that are already fiberglassed, and just going all 6 1/2's, but goal of the 8's is to only have to run the 8's with the mids/tweets during SQ demos/comps. Only thing is I'm not really sure how much SQ stuff I am going to enter. I am thinking of changing doors to all 6 1/2's, then next summer take the time and money to put some L8's in the floor in front of the driver and passenger seat. Damn, I might just tear down the doors altogether now and re-do them......

to clear that up as I just re-read it, basically my future goals are to have a three-way SQ setup consisting of the Legatia 4" mids and L1v2 tweets and a pair of L8's, maybe something cheaper than the L8's to start, but eventually L8's.

the 6 1/2's are basically just there for loud and clean mid-bass, and possibly some reinforcement into the 2-3khz range for when banging the woofers.

What are your thoughts?

I've run a pair of 6.5's to add mid depth to a 5.25 and tweeter combo but don't get running 8's and 6.5's?

not at all a good use for 6.5"ers. They are a major compromise driver size IMO. I'd use the 8's and match them up to a true midrange not a compromise.

wait...so you're saying you don't think 3 pairs of 6.5's will be able to produce good mid-bass? or your saying they wont be good into the 2-3khz range? I really doubt I will end up having them play much over 3-400 hz as my test of installing the second set of 4" mids looks like they will cover from 160hz and up no problem at whatever volume.
