Posted June 24, 200520 yr Ok so i noticed yesterday that my radio would cut out at high volume so i went to the truck looked at the wires and erething seemed coo, I hop back in and it wrlks so i start driving and it does it again...So i justy turn it off and say i'll deal wt it later, so today i get the test light out and go under the hood, and DAAAMMM, my fuse holder was melted and it had started to melt into my finder well.. But the fuse never blew, and basiccly it was only on the side before the fuse. IT was molting i mean the gold was melted off it looked bad i would take pics but its uggly..Why did this happen?I've seen it happen on amplifiers wt plastic coatings around the batt terminal, aka jbl 1200, BUt i dont know why?
June 24, 200520 yr what rating was the fuse and what rating was the fuse holder?Not all fuseholders are rated for above 300amps.You could also have a heat trap problem under the hood.-Nick
June 24, 200520 yr Author idk bout the fuse holder it was 1/0 gauge 1/0, so it had to be pretty high.But i had a 200amp anl fuse.The car audio places say it was just a cheap holder, but the exspensive one looks the same just round.Dont think it was a heat trap problem, but i guess the new one i got i could place it closer to the fan. I bought another cheap one it was only 12$ but its a memphis mojo holder so it can't be that bad.Nah the rating is fine, i have 2 amps, so it should be at least 200 if not more.'ALso they said i should get a circuit breaker instead of a fuse.
June 25, 200520 yr Author now u couldnt have posted this and saved me time? In my opinion and from my experience, circuit breakers are less reliable than fuses (especially when the breaker is mounted in the harsh environment under the hood). Quality fuses like ANL and Maxi fuses have a solid element (no solder connections) and will almost never have an intermittent or poor electrical connection. A circuit breaker will eventually have higher contact resistance than when it was new. This is especially true if the breaker has been tripped (by overcurrent) more than a few times. If you're going to compete and can't take a chance of having a problem like a bad connection in the power line, you should use a good quality fuse. Now I know that people have had fuses blow in competition but it was because the fuse was not properly rated, not because the fuse was defective. For those who have had trouble with glass fuses, read the fuses page of this site.
June 25, 200520 yr in my truck I have a "1/Ott" main holder. It's rated for 300 amps. I have a 500 amp ANL in there. When I was burping in my truck, I was passing UPTO 620 amps per burp.If I tried that for music, there would be no fuse holder left.-Nick
