I drive a reg cab truck. After hearing a friends Xterra and the relativly good imagining and sound stage I have decided to re work my set up. I will be keeping the CDT HD set, I am still very happy with them.

Now, I need some Ideas for staging. Kicks are out of the question unfortunatly, atleast for now.

I have been reading many, man sites about the topics of phase, Imaging, and sound stage. Most have stated the obvious of rear fill cancellation(doenst apply to me), phasing expecally in the upper freq. ranges, and the best locations for your sound stage.

This has led me to think that If I could angle my comp set more that the sound would be better. I see the glassed pods that fit in the stock locations.

I beleove that if I did this I could take full advantage of the time alignment in my HU.

Any ideas?

Are You going for competitive SQ or Your own tastes?

Obviously, this aint my forte', but I've done some reading as well over the past few months. From what I understand, TA < beaming + freq rolloff.

Other then that, I'll venture to say that because it's a reg. cab truck You will be facing some issues with reflections from the rear wall / glass. This may kill you in misdirection & cancellation.

Are You going to stick with 1 component set (mid & tweet) & 1 pair subbass (behind seats)? Or are You still working on the center console project?

Both, Although I have noticed that the SQ comps here are not only few and far between, but HIGHLY based on looks.

I have read some of the same.

I already have a major issue now, many of the cymbols and voices seem to come from the right rear, guitars seem to be directly next to me not in front. Not all songs, just the ones I care about.

1 pair of comps, they do a great job and sound great (when the windows are down and I dont let the imaging get to me.)

Console idea is in the works, just waiting on the driver. I have the idea well planned out. Rear fire...

we should 'free up' your tweets just like you suggested I do mine! Velcro and extra wire. Mine however, landed IN THE STOCK PILLAR LOCATION!!! There's a guy sellin' some CDT-1 tweets for $25 shipped, get 'em and you can use them as imaging tweets on pillars. I'll help any way I can.

I haven't done much with my truck, but, I have found THE BEST sub placement in my particular POS, which is very simliar to yours has been down low in the center behind the seats. The transfer function in the standard cab is horrible as far as cancellation is concerned. If moved to one side or the other, there's definate notice. As far as speaker placement, I personally would not go with anything in the pillars. My experience with that has resulted in: A. way too high of a soundstage, B. Too much directionality no matter the phase or crossover point, and C. too many reflections to deal with off the dash and windshield. There's a lot of "open" space available down low and drivers with wide dispersion and great off-axis characteristics to do a great sounding KP install.

x2 on everything u just said. i can tell when i move my sub from side to side in my truck. my tweets in the A pillars totally blew. i had my tweets in the kicks and the imaging wasnt bad, but the soundstage was low.

i just said screw it and threw in horns to make imaging easier and am making doorpods for my mids right now. if u want a lot more info, PM audiolife on CA.com. he's helped me a ton with imaging/setup.

if you plan on making doorpods, just lemme know and i'll copy/paste the whole conversation he had with me on setting it up.

I think that the rear fire center area is the best idea for the sub, so I stuck with it.

I have all the space in the doors, I really cant afford to have kicks though. Just not enough room. That is the main reason I scratched the 8" in the door idea.

I am going to move/play with the placing before I really decide to cut/mold anything.

3rd gen F's have always held a place in my heart

383s touch me a bit lower ;)

Big fan of the 91-92 Zs with the large wing and the white w/red stripes, and black w/red stripes.

This one is an '88 coupe that I converted into a Z with several spare cars. The current owner has redone the interior and finished the paint scheme I had in mind. Silver with black racing stripes and black ground effects, I saw it a few months ago, looks REAL good. Either way I will snap a few pics here soon on my next trip to Arkansas.

I played around a bit lastnight with the imaging. Angling them make a bit of a difference. Tweets on the pillar is a no go. Way too much. Tonight I will try making a baffle for the kicks to see how that works. If it turns out OK I will see what I can do about kick pannels. There goes my leg room. That damn sub better get here soon before my leggs fall off...

Anyone know where I can get a reasonably cheap RTA?

  • Author

Does a TL have the RTA on it? Maybe I should try and get one if it does. I could charge people a little to meter thier systems and eventually get my money back.

Just checked. Yes the TL has the option for the RTA, O-scope, and Spectrum analizer. But it is an extra $199 right now on top of the already $599 price tag :(

The behringer is an awesome unit. You could even incorporate it into the vehicle. The Termlabs all have RTAs.

As for the kicks, I can imagine you losing any legroom from just putting tweets in there. I didn't. But then again, I'm only 5'9".

Yah, I know of no cheap yet good RTA... I shopped a few months ago for a local nut. Sorry amigo.

A-Pillar tweets are generally too much.. :faintthud:

I dont like kick panels eaither, I have size 14 feet.

Door pods are the easiest other option...

-OR-

You could integrate them into the custom center console that You were thinking about :o :0 ...but that might bring the image too high up as well :(

Nope, they only came out with an actual RTA mic in the last couple of months.

They previously had a basic spectrum analyzer within the competition frequencies (20-100hz).
