Posted July 31, 200520 yr i just hooked my system up, and every now and then, when i have it turned up, both my amps shut down, like the remote was coming undone at the deck. deck stays on and all, amps dont give me protect lights they just turn off for a few seconds and come back on (not always off for the same length of time) my electrical system is all stock, i believe its only a 105 amp alternator, 4 gauge wire back to the distributor, and 8 gauge to the amps. any ideas?
July 31, 200520 yr Author i was thinking it was probably something to do with my charging system, havent done the big 3 yet, probably do that tomorrow. i seem to have a bit of a voltage problem lol. i have an msd distributor and 6al controller, and when my bass hits it drops my rpms hard, like from 2k to 1100 or so, car jerks. hoping i dont need a new alternator but thinking i will.
July 31, 200520 yr if ur revs are dropping that much...time for a new batt and alt! no way around it!btw, what amps and how are the subs wired?wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
July 31, 200520 yr If your voltage drops far enough for the amps to shut off the big 3 won't save you. Get a better battery(Kinetik, Optima, whatever) or a bigger alt(I highly reccomend this), or both.
July 31, 200520 yr beat ya to it!! lolslow poke!wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee <{POST_SNAPBACK}>:kids voice: YOU'RE RUINING MY LIFE!
August 1, 200520 yr Author its an elemental designs nine.1 at 1 ohm and an OLD SCHOOL kenwood 35x4, not sure the year but i'd guess 94 or 95. couple other things i noticed while driving earlier. after they stop playing, sometimes my subs still do a little thump thump thing. isnt very loud, like they're barely playing, and its not the music i was listening to. when i shut off my deck and turn it back on, it plays the music like normal again.. i know im gonna have to probably replace alt and battery, but can a weak charging system cause those noises?
August 1, 200520 yr Author how big of an alternator am i going to need, 200ish? planning on eventually replacing the rl-p's with either brahma or eclipse titanium 12's and running a 2nd nine.1 so want head room. better off replacing the alternator before the battery im guessing?
August 1, 200520 yr Author so whats a good alternator manufacturer? dont want to just get some autozone crap. how about a good place to score a cheap one? was looking on summitracing.com but im sure there are cheaper places.

August 1, 200520 yr Extremeamperage is having a group buy, check at CA.com<{POST_SNAPBACK}>* excessive
August 1, 200520 yr Author geez i didnt realize how expensive these things were... im probably going to try and get in on that group buy if they can accept a credit card. with an optimus battery, will i be alright with a 180 or should i go 200?
August 1, 200520 yr and 8 gauge to the amps. any ideas?<{POST_SNAPBACK}>8 awg is pretty small for a nine.1, especially if you are running both amps off the same wire with a distribution block.
August 1, 200520 yr Author i know, upgrading to 0/1 gauge and a 4 gauge block this week, just have it that way because the 4 gauge was already run from the battery to back.
August 1, 200520 yr fix your wiring and then let us know if anything improvescould overheating be a factor as well?
August 1, 200520 yr Author well the nine.1 does get pretty hot, but both amps shut down at the same time, so i doubt it.
August 4, 200520 yr Author well i finished doing the big 3 today, all in 4 gauge, and saw a major improvement in charging. it was dropping to around 9 volts on certain frequencies before, now it only goes down to maybe 11 at the worst, and theres no more of the jerking, just very slight rpm drops. but my amps are still shutting down and giving me the weird thump thump thump noises. i have no power block with fuses right now, just a splitter, 4 gauge into 2 8 gauges. have a 100 amp circuit breaker by the battery that has never tripped. i pulled up the carpet and checked where the amps in the back were grounded and there was paint, so i grinded that off and put it back, same thing. i ordered a 200 amp from excessive, and got a 31 series yellow top from 02sscamaro on here, waiting for those to come now but wont be able to install them until im off work again on monday. anymore thoughts? sounds just fine until it does that, no distortion hiss or anything, but once it starts doing that thump thump it just sounds nasty, likes its no good for the equipment even though its not very loud.
August 4, 200520 yr yep, need 1/0 or at the very least 2ga.I would also upgrade that fuse to be sized to 95% of the current carrying capacity of the wire.
August 4, 200520 yr Author i've got 20 feet of 0/1 gauge coming, will arrive with the battery, along with a fuse holder for up by the battery. still think thats whats causing the amps to cut out and make that noise, just low voltage?
August 4, 200520 yr Yep, ever try to suck a golf ball through a straw? Same idea. High current + higher wire resitance = Voltage drop across wire like mad, and with that could come melting wire/fire from the power dissipated on the wire.voltage = current X resistance btw
