Okay, So to find out what Hz my car peaks at, do I try out different test tones to see which one is the loudest in my car? If so, then what do I do from there?

Say my car peaks at 37hz...do I tuned my port to 37hz?

Reason asking is because I built a 2.5cuft. net @ 32hz enclosure with a 4" aeroport. I can take it out and cut it down for SPL. I just want to do it right since I only have one tube insert left. I'm aiming for SPL, not a fartbox.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Somebody correct me or elaborate on my response, but I believe you need to measure the sub outside the car first.

Then measure it inside the car and compare the two.

I believe the tuning/response of the box can/will skew the the results of a test done only in the car.

You said you only have your ears and a DMM, but I'd think a cheap RTA would do what you need it to.

I remember reading about this in the past, but I don't remember the details, sorry.

I believe you'd need to have a flat in car response first, good luck with that, to only use your ears or allot of testing.

Someone smarter then I will chime in soon enough I'd think.

Also: You said you want spl not a fart box, but if your tuning to your resonant freq. I believe you will end up with a high tuned fart box, so I'd be more specific as to your goals and you'll get "better" answers.

I'm trying to get more SPL out of the 12" Mag claw, I know it's more geared too SQ, but I wanna see how loud I can get it.

Also, is my enclosure too big? I noticed my bass is a little muggy. I don't know if it's the box or if my LPF is set too high. I believe its around 90hz. Might be a mix of mp3 quality and song choice, but sometimes my bass sounds like a hollow knock if that makes sense.

I'm running off a Cerwin Vega EXL-1200D @ 1ohm. Rated 1200rms @ 1ohm. I only have a 115amp alt. so I know the sub isn't seeing that much power.

Basically I want to know why people look to see what feq. they're car peaks at and how that would be useful in my situation. For example, air force ones- by Jeezy gets really loud. So say I figure out what freq. that bassline plays at, could that be any use to mean as far as port tuning goes?

Well from you last statement you're looking for a specific freq. to tune you enclosure to, not necessarily you resonant freq..

People that find their RF use it for competing. For fart boxes. Your wasting your time. If you want more output, tune higher and lose on the low end. Or buy another driver and or run more power (within drivers rms...)

If you're looking for the one song and loud at 40 hertz on that one song, then 37hz., not 43hz.

louder, slightly above tuning freq. of the enclosure.

Make sure you raise the sub/infrasonic filter to compensate.

Okay so I cut my port to ~37hz. My subsonic filter is set to 29 when it was 32hz, Should I set it differently?

You need to seal your woofer, get a meter, and run a few sweeps to find the resonant frequency, then build a ported enclosure about 5 Hz. below your resonant frequency, and adjust your SSF accordingly so you don't unload your woofer.

Also, your ears are NOT a meter, loud to your ears is very different than loud to a meter.

I have found the easiest way to find the peak freq of your vehicle is to get a test tone cd start at 25hz go all the way up to 80hz any size sub will work in a sealed box make sure you start an finish the test with the same volume etc throughout the test, and obviously I like to use a termlab, but you can use other options just need to look around, or ask around an see if anyone is in your area with a termlab, when Im home I open my termlab up to anyone that needs it an do a test and tune session no problem.
