Posted May 13, 201114 yr Does anybody have experience Customizing TRF Motors? Im looking to create a low end monster with pretty good sound . It will be a 18" woofer thats a daily driver. Are there any particular parts I should request as far as layers to the voice coil or a certain size spiders? Im probably going to go through PSI and have it built.
May 13, 201114 yr Author I forgot to add that I will be running about 2000 rms to the woofer. If that makes a difference
May 17, 201114 yr Author Bump I know somebody got some info? I hear this is mainly a spl motor, is it possible to make them sound good?
May 17, 201114 yr Pretty sure those are just TC 4HP motors, maybe minor modification. They are very strong motors, which typically means very low Q. Large 4" diameter coil can be both good and bad depending on circumstances and your viewpoint on things. Sounding "good" is going to depend on your preference and what parts are ultimately used to rebuild it. Shouldn't be hard to make it loud though. Part of the problem is that you are going to be reconing the driver with as yet unknown parts....we can't tell you how a driver will sound when we don't know anything about it yet. Just knowing the motor doesn't tell us anything about what the final incarnation of the driver will be.Is it possible to make it listenable? Sure. Is it possible to turn it into a fart cannon? Sure.
May 17, 201114 yr Author Thanks Impious, I get what your saying. I found out that the silver top trf motor is supposed to be better for daily use because the gap is wider. Also I have heard that the silver top trf motor takes a 8 layer coil? Anyone with knowledge on the subject please correct me if Im wrong
