i have a 1995 ford ranger ext cab 4.0 v6. has 150xxx HARD miles on here. this noise had occured before about 8 months ago ten stopped. havent heard it since. they yesterday, it started again. it sounds like a supercharger and only does it when the truck is cold... any thoughts????

100% stab in the dark, but have you checked your air filter for splits in the folds or something foreign in the air intake track form the silencer to the throttle body?

Where do you hear it the loudest? In the cab or outside the truck, front or rear.

pop your hood.. rev and drop and look for the noise.

It's the cap on the idle air control valve. It's a common problem on the 4Ls. It needs cleaned or replaced. All the Explorers in my family have done it as well as our old Aerostar.
