Posted January 4, 201312 yr Ive searched and searched for any info about how to decrease the noise created by my Thule 686XT Atlantis 1600 Roof Box to no avail. Is that because its simply a silly thing to try since it just makes so much noise?I have done no sound damping to my Subaru Impreza, but plan to address noise coming through the floor, hood, doors and roof. my question is this: Is there something I can do to the box to get it to resonate less? Or do i simply focus on the roof and possibly, load bars and rails?Thank you very much for any help you may offer.Noah
January 4, 201312 yr Deadening will help inside the most. Deadening the box itself probably won't help a lot, you could try it. Maybe a few squares in it. Seems like most of the noise would be a howl just from wind hitting it. Latter racks on trucks cause the same issue. I would give the car the full treatment and try a few sheets in the box itself and just see.
January 5, 201312 yr Pull the headliner down and sandwich a sheet of "mass loaded vinyl" between the headliner and sheetmetal.
January 14, 201312 yr Author Quentin, good suggestion. Raammat came friday, so i spent sunday morning pulling everything out and treating the roof. I also treated the drivers door. i can already tell a difference & i will be finishing the doors, floor and spare tire/cargo area when I get time. I also played around with the box itself. i put a couple pieces of vinyl in the top portion in the larger expanses. i also injected great stuff door and window foam inbetween the interior "skeleton" braces and the actual exterior shell. there was a lot of squeaking and rubbing when going over bumps and in cross winds. no more. its much better.
