Hello everyone, I was using the search button, but I didn't come up with a solid answer. I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I'm looking for the recommend box size for 1 orphan sealed. I've read from other post that said the orphan are about the same as the SA-8 and likes the sealed box size of .17^3ft. I've also read a post from mike, that It needed .2 to .5^3ft, but I'm not sure if it was the recommended for seal or port. I actually wanted to try out they type of boxes and see which one sounds better to me. I do want to to try to make a passive radiator box, which I believe these subs were intended for. Here is the info from another post on this forum.

T/S Parameters for the Orphan 8 Single 6 Ohm:

  • Qts - 0.405
  • Qes - 0.442
  • Qms - 4.778
  • Fs - 34.289 Hz
  • Re - 5.25 Ohm
  • Ls - 12.16mH
  • Lp - 4.053 mH
  • Rp - 25.46 Ohm
  • Vas - 5.031 L
  • Mms - 214.1 g
  • Cms - 100.6 m/N
  • Bl - 23.39 T*m
  • Sensitivity - 78.44 dB
  • 17mm Xmax

Per their site they recommend .5 sealed. I haven't modeled it so I'm not sure what the Q is at that volume.

Can you link me to there site?

yea, I just saw that too. Its not the same sub. Is there a way to actually calculate a subs recommended box size from the tech specs?  I tried to use a slotted box calculator, but I am still trying to figure everything out and i think it needed a cubic ft size.

Thanks for the help by the way. I've been trying to get my head around everything the last couple of days and its a lot to read through.

Yea I calculated it but I believe that the VAS has to be wrong seems a little low

Going by the parameters you need .08 cubic feet for a q of .7

I'd expect the vas to be around 15-20 liters giving the other parameters.

Since I don't really understand the concept of Q. It looks like ppl want it between .5 and .7 to get a better lower response in a sealed box? It is impossible for a .08 cubic ft space to fit this sub. So, I should probably build the smallest box possible? So im really looking at a box of .17 cu ft after sub displacement? i think thats the smallest I've read about. The sub were supposedly make to work with a PR box, maybe thats why the specs are different....?

normally people prefer a Q of around .707. It gives the flattest responce with the lowest rolloff point.  However some like a slightly higher Q around .8-.85 that offers a slightly warmer feel with a little increase in DB.

I dont have the formulas with me to calculate But I,m 99.999999 percent that the VAS is wrong.  Vas is directly related to enclosure volume.
