Just recently went from 2 ohms to .5 ohms on my Crescendo 3500d and I heard that if you wire down you should always turn down the gain from where you had it originally.  I'm really not sure if this is even remotely correct but I did it anyway to be on the safe side.  I was just curious if someone could help me out.

At the moment.. These subs don't really like it.   So as of now its impossible to tell if I can turn the gain up.. I wont know until I actually get my subs in that are rated for the power I'm running.

If your amp starts running out of gas (rail limits) you are going to go over the thermal threshold of your woofers.  The gain setting is arbitrary, just don't get to that point with your amp...

If you wired for a lower impednace, all else being equal, your amplifier will now try and produce more power with the same given input.  So it will run out of gas sooner...

I have a great electrical backup.. So that's not an issue.

Not just your electrical.  The amplifier's internal power supply is going to have it's limit of what it can support before it starts to sag, the output section is going to have current and rail voltage limitations.

Like Impious said this has nothing to do with your electrical.  This is the nature of an amplifier...
