January 10, 201411 yr Author A clipped signal creates more power over a given period. This is the only thing that will kill a sub. The coil is just a wound up wire it doesn't care what type of power it recieved as long as it does not exceed it's thermal rating it won't break.The only other reason for failure would be the tensil leads breaking which should not be an issue as the parts should work well past the mechanical clearance of the edge.Or the coil is bottoming out and the coil is shorting out on the back plate. But you should be able to hear that.I think clipping is the answer. I need to do my research and learn how to setup my gains better. I do feel the sub get a really warm at time. I need to take it out and check the tinsel leads. And make s ure its still OK.. also I've noticed my box leaks air around the speaker, might that have something to do with it?Yes, it can have detrimental effects on the sub, the way it performs and the power it can handle. Give us the exact dimensions of the enclosure and the length of the port that's being used and we can verify with better certainty that your enclosure is indeed 1.4cuft and that the port is tuned to 32hz. The XCON's are NOT easy subs to tear up and you're probably trying to get WAY more out of the sub than it can deliver. I have a 10" XCON on an SAZ-1500 and it never gets warm, never smells and should last a very long time. On that Rockford it should last an eternity with only 1kw feeding it so I would imagine it's a combination of things, air leaks, questionable enclosure specifications, and clipping that has lead to the demise of the sub, twice.Depth 14.25 in.height 12.75 in.Width 32.25 in.It has an indentation on a corner to go around the floor of my car, the specs to that isWidth 32.25 inHeight 3.5 inDepth 7 in3 inch aero port 11 in. long
January 10, 201411 yr I use to have the same problem years ago....get every bit of power out of the ampand cook the sub...turns out sad every timeI like to over power my subs now.....a 2000w amp set correctly would spank an Xconreally really good with out producing any smoke....a little bit to much clean power will not hurt a sub as long as the mechanical limits are notover exceeded for example when I had a pair of 10"Icons on my Crown A3000gti amp..(LOL)...they took the powerwith out cooking the coils but the cones ripped clean off the surrounds when the mechanical limitswere exceededthe coils darkened slightly but no smoke with well over a true 3,200w rms going to them

I guess its time to invest in an OSCOPETime to say fuck no and not buy an o-scope lol don't waste your money on it as it won't do you any good. You need to do your gain setting with you're senses. It's the easiest and best way to do it. You set all your settings where they need to be (also head unit at 3/4 volume) and then turn the gain up slowly while you listen for distress of the sub. It'll start to sound different, in a bad way, once you hit that spot then back off the gains just enough to where you don't hear the stress/distortion.
