Effects on sound from fiberglassing an enclosure?
j-roadtatts replied to j-roadtatts's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
I want to start out by saying THANKS to you guys that took the time to school me yesterday. Next I want add that I am NOT here to show off. I am here to learn and get the most from my set up. I LOVE to build things but must sometimes learn from my mistakes. Like I said I am here to get my box right and I WILL listen to what you guys tell me. I tried to PM that guy on here that claims to help people design boxes to go over a box design, but he never PMed me back after two weeks So I Just went for it. At this point I would like someone to help me finish my box design. I DON'T think I will waste anymore time fiberglassing. I think I should add two oak dowels from the front to back wall. I will do 45's in the corners IF you think its necessary? ANYTHING else you guys think I should or shouldn't do? I would love to have someone double check my math ALSO. This is my first box design and being built in to the trunk I want to make sure it's right. Let me know if you would like to help and I will post all the numbers. I will use areo ports if needed. I am a VERY humble guy and just want to get the most out of my money and sytem. Thanks again in advance for ALL the help and you WILL get my vote. J-Road -
My what a SEXY sub you have got there.

the world of internet print can sometimes be misleading as new info is added everyday, and all the misprints will never be completely fixed. Take everything you read with a grain of salt. The best way to know your facts is call Nathan on the phone. I have already been through this whole conversation with Nathan about the 3400s so you get this one for free. Glad I could help.

Ha Ha where to start. I grew up in a diesel mechanic shop that my dad owned and he would let me strip stereos out of old cars. I had a Kraco tape deck and some Spark-o-matics speakers I mounted on a piece of plywood in my room and wired up with an 12v converter. I was 12.

Effects on sound from fiberglassing an enclosure?

When you say "acts like a mirrior for waves" does this mean the sound waves are more true (being mirriored) to what the speaker is producing? That is how I read this statement. Does this Possibly Refect more mechanical noise? -

10ths on a meter, nothing really audible. I do NOT compete. I only listen at full tilt driving on the highway by myself. More interested in knowing if the fiberglass will change the sound? . -

I can't put false back on the box this time and DON'T want to see bolt ends. Not my style. If you think The back needs more bracing I will do dowel or a few flat metal brackets inside? The little extra volume won't hurt me. As far as overkill I definetly like to over think things and get carryed away. I respect your opinion alot Duran so please don't hold back. -

I am doing the corners and kerf bend twice. The false ceiling on my port is bracing the back wall. All the other walls are pretty small because of the box design. Like I said I was worried about air leaks more than flexing because the other 4 sides will be encased in expanding foam and the front is double baffle. Do any of you guys thing my box needs Bracing? -
Thanks for the kind words!!! As far as building things, I enjoy fabicating EVERYTHING and have been collecting tools for 15 years. If I am going to build something I usually spent a long time planning . I would NOT even get out bed if I was going to do something half assed. LIFE is short so lets get to ENJOYING this mutha fucka... As far as the box it's not that complicted, just about two weeks of spare time worth of math and a shiiiiiiiiiiiiit load of patience!!!

Glad to hear you say it won't be audible!!! I was really more worried about the box leaking as I won't be able remove once installed. I was under the impression that the glass would make the MDF act a thicker was my only other reason. Ridged is maybe not always better? Now that the box is glassed a knock test sounds a little higher tone, not as dead sounding as MDF without glass? -
Damn your a fast typer. This is what I wanted to hear you say as the box is already glassed.

M5 do you think a little flex will make a softer or "warmer" sound? -
So a little flex is possibly a little smoother or "warmer" sounding?

It won't help with much of the above and if by fiberglass you mean resin alone it will actually make the mdf weaker. If you mean glass, well then you should reinforce it as glass isn't particularly great in flat areas. Doing that though will knock the 10ths off from above. Yes I am using cloth with the resin. The box is built out of lots of short spans of MDF, not to many large flat area's. Also four walls of the box will be encased in expandable foam from the outside. the other two walls are the double baffle and the back wall is braced so probly won't much flex much anyway. .If you aren't competing or aren't worth building a few different boxes to play around I wouldn't bother. M5 I respect your opinion and the box is already built so will you check my build log and tell me what you think about the glass in this particular situation? -
Beautiful work of ART Jacob. I hope to give you my money someday!!!

I actully read your 1000 post and thought the same thing! I hit a 100 the other day!

Actually Fiberglass resin cures by a chemical reaction and creates its own heat. The resin Got rock hard in about an hour. Yeah I just said rock hard...lol.

There is NO differance in the two batterys. They are the SAME battery. The S3400 has a red sticker and comes with the SAE post adaptor kit. The S3400 is the only battery in the "S" seires that does NOT come with a steel case. "S" stands for starting.

Honestly I never thought about the glass effecting sound. Like I said this is my first box design and build. The reasons I did use the glass is to make the box extra ridged, guarantee no air leaks, and raise the boxes failure point. Also I just like playing with glass. I have never heard an FI product or a BTL for that matter. I found this forum a year ago through Fi's website and everyone keeps saying "its all in the enclosure". So I built the biggest, baddest box I could think of. I enjoy building with my hands and definetly like to build things HEAVY DUTY. I would love to hear reasons why the glass is bad or good. The reason I am making this build log is to get CRITICIZED and told what I am doing wrong. I am no master and am just trying to do this build to the best of my abilities from what I've seen and learned. Please be as brutal as you guys have to be to tell me what I am doing wrong, I am a fast learner. As far as the Dampener I have 60 sq ft and the Luxury liner I have 4 sheets. I plan on dampening everything except the trunk because it will be sealed off with foam. The liner will start as far up the front floor as I can get it, front side of the rear wheel wells, and the front doors for starters. I will buy more when needed. I only listen at full tilt on the highway, and hate road noise. I don't bump in town, but hate hearing people and noises from outside my car. I would buy a BMW or Caddy for the quiet ride but would hate to chop up a luxury car.
