That is a thought, but in this case, I was not spammed, and I believe they do that so the account is not banned until the admin is notified. So I appreciate any and all info on things like this so I can take care of it as fast as possible. I'll let ya know as soon as I get another one. It makes sense they wouldn't spam you...

Denim, After these past two days of receiving the spam, I've come up with a thought. If one were to look at the number of posts the spammer has made, which in this case I beleive has been -0-; it would be best to delete the post for our own personal puter protection and not post anything about their spam. You (Denim) would find about it anyway and they wouldn't be getting their jollies that they have the hornet's nest stirred up. Some folks get off in the strangest ways. If they are ignored....they may move on.... Cheers

    spammer

I didn't know this information was openly available. The spammers can do anything they want with this info posted. Every webmaster's nightmare for sure. I now have my Yahoo website set up so I have to authorize any posts as I started receiving a lot of this stuff and much more adult and vulgar garbage a year ago. Kids go to my site. It's a lot of work but I don't mind the trouble. This is a much bigger site and the additional verification work would be prohibitive. I had a phpBB forum attached to my website and I closed it down after about 3 months due to these idiots. I wish the Administrater the best with this one....

It's annoying right now, just wait until they learn how to attach a virus. It appears that these guy/s are so smart, they are able to hack the websites and get admin privelidges and mass mail. Good time to change the Admin password to something that is so difficult to hack....just a thought....

I got my second one this morning 7:00 a.m. CST. The webmaster here should have a log file on all IP addresses and you can track it down the spammer's webhosting server using Arin or Internic. The webhosting service can look up the user and shut him down. I've had to do that a couple of times. I managed to even speak to the owner of the server because their phone number is posted on Arin or Intenic. It works. I was under constant attempted attacks. The sad part is they can just go somewhere else and do the same thing. Perhaps a stricter verification should be in place before they are allowed to post. Mike

New Home Audio Speaker Site and Forum

Hey Mark, I appreciate the nice introduction to the members here about my new website http://www.SpeakerHobby.com After ten years of building, tearing down, and rebuilding many times, my home theater speakers are finished. I figured it was time to give back to the audio community in some form or another, what I have received over the years. I couldn't have the wonderful system I have right now if so many people in these forums had not helped me with all of their information, graph work, comments, and suggestions. I decided to purchase a new domain name and webmaster a website that I could provide the new (or seasoned) DIY'er a comprehensive list of suppliers, free software, audio resources, and also host a forum that others could join and interact with. I am short on knowledge compared to a lot of the seasoned audio gurus out there, but I am very good at finger pointing..... I will answer all emails. My site is totally free and my links to the dealers are free and posters can talk about any product lines they desire on my forum becasue my forum is not manufacturer based so different product discussions won't be an issue. Behind the scenes, I already have a couple of hundred hours getting the site and webhosting work done along with the posts and links I have already put on my site. Each photo takes time to edit, format, hyperlink and etc. I am adding to my new site daily and hope you guys (and gals) will start joining my forum to help get the forum going. As with all new websites and forums it takes time for a forum community to grow. I'm here for the long haul because my website is non profit based and I plan to be around a long time so I can continue to add to the site and help others. I enjoy helping others as much as I enjoy listening to my system. I used to run my own offshore charterboat fishing business out of Galveston and I enjoyed helping others catch fish more than I enjoyed fishing myself. I have worked with handicapped kids and taken them out there in groups to fish on larger boats through donations by the big boats so they could always have something to talk about and remember because these kids are in lockdown 24 hours a day. "It is all about giving". Thanks, Mike Cason (mfishmike) Mike P........On my last visit with my doctor for my annual visit, I talked to her about my speaker problem. She said I had a severe case of "Acute Passive Radiator Syndrome", and the only cure was a healthy dose of cynanide. I passed on the suggested med.....

    exursion limits

You can even blow them at 1kw....They don't need that much power to drive them, even though they are posted to operate between 500 to 1000 watts rms, that is "peak", not sustained. I've had to replace two of mine in my HT sub when my wife changed movies. I had 1450 watts per driver and it just took a split second. I'd set your amp gain back to around 800 because they will sound at or near their best at that wattage. This gives you a little room for protection from overdriving them with transients and ultra low bass like rap and dance music. You are walking a thin line to overexcursion and blowing them. I've cut my gains back on my Alpine 400 watt amp in my truck with the Pioneer shallow mount driver and don't notice any difference. I have room to set the subwoofer bass management lower as well as the bass control for really low bass so I don't blow the driver. It's called driver insurance.... I've got my HT subs now set at 800 watts and I'm more than happy with the output. Some or most amps aren't stable pushed to their limits at sustained levels, so you could get spikes from the amp. Dual RLP-15 passive radiator design

I'm glad to hear a good report from another passive radiator user..... A lot of cheap speaker builders stick in some of them to make them look great but the passives are really garbage and not designed correctly. We call them "white van speakers"...Google that phrase.... I've bought from John before. He won't return my posts in the threads or private emails. We had a strained relationship when he had all of his personal problems and closed shop. He is selling his 18" 1600 and 2100 gram passives through CSS though. They are similar to Adire's flat mdf passives and do work great. I've got 8 Eminence cone passives loaded to 1100 grams each and 4 of the SoundSplinter RLP-15 drivers, so I don't plan on making any more changes unless I get an offer for the ones I've built. They are great as is! I don't think that will happen because they will be pricey....
  11. Well, it's been a while since I've posted on this site and need to update my success with the RLP/passive design. For those of you who have read the following thread, a lot has changed. (about 2,400 visits to the thread) http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/i...shmike&st=0 By hitting each of those drivers in the sub cabinet with 1450 watts each, my wife blew the speakers while changing movies to a hard hitting Jurassic Park scene via Direct TV. I couldn't get to the living room in time to shut it down. I had to order two more drivers from Mike and received them promptly. Being dual 2 ohm, I wired all 4 coils on both drivers in series and am now presenting an 8 ohm load to the QSC amp resulting in about 800 watts for the subwoofer. Well I asked myself, what are you going to do with the other amp and the obvious answer was that I just need to build another identical subwoofer!!! After the recent completion of the second sub, I tried to locate them on opposite sides of the room and got cancellations, so I took some good advice and stacked them. (Co-locating) Now they are acting as one 6.5 ft tall subwoofer with 4 drivers, 8 passive radiators, and two amps. Mike P., a good solid member and regular poster ran the numbers in WinIsd and I'm at 23.5 hz tuning on paper, with actual tuning testing out at 22 hz. With room gain, these subs really get low, distortion and port noise free. The RLP-15 dual 2 ohm drivers have a low Q of .33 which is ideal for this design. I've ordered the Reckhorn B-1 equilizer and will use the 20 hz bass bost with subsonic frequency protection and built in high pass filter and get these puppies tweaked to perfection. For those of you who have never heard a very good passive radiator sub, you will be surprised at how clean and low they reach with the room gain, providing you with their own unique bass quality not found in a sealed or ported subwoofer. There are some major companies working on production of some affordable passive radiators to be hitting the market this year as the demand is increasing due to the increase of popularity of this type of desgn. They will be capable of a heavier mass loading than the ones I'm using and with a larger box and heavier passive radiator, we can get those hz down even lower, even though I don't need it any lower than what I've got. I don't recommend a box tuned too low so you don't take the risk of bottoming out your drivers and or passives. Michael Murray's organ music hits his lowest notes very clean and undistorted. Movie explosions and soundtracks have broken the seal on my 5' x 6' plate glass window in my new home as well as knick knacks and vases falling off of shelves. It could have been the concerts with kick drums or kettle drums. I'm very pleased with all of the help I've received from Mike @ Soundsplinter over these past few years and will continue to do business with him every time my wife blows my drivers. His email and pm response time, as well as prompt shipping is unmatched by any distributor I've ever bought from. Visit my link below to see the construction details: http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/mfishmike/ Enjoy your Soundsplinter drivers in what ever application you are using them for! Dual RLP-15 passive radiator design

I started on mine years ago. I've rebuilt my speakers many times and have near 20k in it now. I had some chaps come from England and audition my system and were going to sell some land holdings there to buy my complete package. I guess they never were able to come up with the funds or figured out the cost of shipping. Never heard back. Be careful, it's addicting! The better they start sounding, the better you want them to sound.....(Ooooh, I just might want to adopt that phrase!.....just made it up...) Take care, Mike

    Dual RLP-15 passive radiator design

How about a teaser?.....The Reckhorn B-1 just hit my front door........I'll post some results later today.... I've got both pro amps set to 30 hz filter protection, losing some bass for sure. The options are 30 hz & 50 hz or none. I can't wait to turn the amp's protection off and get it down to 15 with a bass boost at 20hz (adjustable)! The Reckhorn is installed and whew.....Have you ever watched your curtains dance with the music????? This finely built German made box allows home and pro audio equipment to work flawlessly together! It is a well engineered, finely machined, and is a good looking box. The controls feel like they are very high quality. It is heavy for its small size. Now the filters on the amps are turned off and I'm only using the clip limiters and am taking full advantage of the Reckhorn's controls. The 20 hz bass boost really makes a difference. I've got the subsonic filter set around 15hz. I had the Arts Clean Box installed for only about 10 minutes before I yanked it out. With the bass boost set to 20 hz and gain for the boost about 50% I'm getting even better bass with less cone excursion, probably due to the fact the drivers are close to the box's tuning frequency. I'm seeing about a 30% improvement in overall performance. Mike

  16. Hi again Mike..... The first thing I want to mention is I don't see any posts in regards to your drivers being used in the home theater market. Most or all of the posts are for autos and SUV's. Are you selling many for home use yet? If so, I guess they aren't posting in the forums. It's been a while since I've visited your forum. My subwoofer is still performing flawlessly! My system has become such a hit that folks with new music and movie DVD's are coming out of the woodwork to come over to view them for the first time on my system. It wouldn't be complete without your subs.... As you might remember, I'm running two of your RLP 15" in a single box which has the recommended volume for just a single driver along with 4 passive radiators. I've got pictures falling off of the walls and stuff sliding off of shelving two rooms away. I just would like the challenge of building the best of the best. I just can't stand it any longer and need another project. Work is better now and I would like to start on the Grandaddy of all subs! I'm looking into the possibility of installing two of your RLS 15's in a single sealed cabinet. With the high QT, it would have to be sealed and no passive radiators. I don't want the port noise and tuning issues either. I don't want to go the infinite baffel route. My attic gets too hot. What would be your recommendation for the ultimate home theater sub, your drivers, and a sealed cabinet? Two of the RLS 15's or two of the RLP 18's, in a single cabinet. I don't have the living room space for two separate cabinets. I'll still be using two of the QSC 1450 watt amps; 1450 watts @ 4 ohms, one amplifier per driver, bridged to mono. I still want to keep my very rich clean low end bass at low volumes as well as with the higher spl for movies and loud concerts. I'll probably be selling my current 6 driver sub without the amps for $1,400 if I decide to take the challenge. It's been on Craiglist for a while here in Houston/Clear Lake and I have some folks with some interest, but not the money. I want your straight up answer. You've always been good to me and I certainly appreciate it, just like all of your customers. Thanks, Mike Cason

    SoundSplinter Drivers & Home Theater

Thanks Denim, I'm proud of the SoundSplinter products and the excellent service I've received over the years so I'll continue to be a customer as long as I have the need for drivers in the future. Very best regards, Mike

    SoundSplinter Drivers & Home Theater

I checked the home theater forum for other's project and forgot I had made several posts there. I've been in a year and a half long truck restoration project..... I've been in contact with Mike today and I'm getting two more of the RLP 15's and duplicating what I already have with the passive radiators. Those passive radiators really extend the lows for me with out the porting problems. It just costs quite a bit more. The RLS-15 is unavailable now, and I would also have to get two higher output amps to pump them if they were. With "two" subwoofers like the one I've already built and tested to be awesome, that should be plenty for any home theater or living room. I've been driving each driver with their own QSC 1450 amp bridged with a 4 ohm load. In order to build another subwoofer I needed one of those amps for the new sub, so I played with the wiring on my drivers. I've got two drivers with DVC 2 ohms. I wired all four coils in series and ended up with an 8 ohm load to the amp. Bridged with the 8 ohm load, a single QSCamplifier seems to be doing a great job and is running cooler as the fans don't kick up to high gear when the system is cranked up. I tested it with Fleetwood Macs Rumors album and Diana Krall's Live in Paris which has a nice string bass. The sound is fantastic. I didn't think one QSC could do so well pushing two drivers. I had them in stereo before so I think by running all the voice coils in series, presenting the 8 ohm load to the amp as one driver with the amp bridged to mono was the secret I've been looking for. I hope this information can help someone who finds themselves in a situation similar to mine. Mike

Update on my HT dual RLP15 & passive radiators

You're welcome.....I've spent many years building and rebuilding this system to get what Best Buy or Home Theater store doesn't have to offer. I love bragging on my good suppliers too! Mike
  21. Mike, I want to thank you for the two new replacement drivers you sent me. Here is the update on the rebuilds.... BTW for those who don't know what happened. My wife blew out my last two drivers due to switiching to a Jurassic Park movie with the gains still set at full. She doesn't mess with the settings on the equipment. I am running a QSC 1450 amp to each driver. A 1450 watt amp is too much power for these drivers if not monitored by you! I over amp for low bass at low volumes for my music. I divided the cabinet with heavy partitioning and made two cabinets in one reducing the cubes down to about 2.2 per cabinet, each having their own driver and two passives. Each driver is still being driven by it's own 1450 watt amplifier. It sounded absolutely disgusting. I tried to fix it with polyfil but that didn't help at all. I really didn't think this design would work but that is what this DIY is all about. I went by your website specs for the cubic feet recommendation of around 5 cubes and removed the partion. I blocked one driver hole and two passive radiator holes and ended up with a single cabinet with a single driver and two passive radiators. It really sounded good, and if I had the time and patience I could have built a second cabinet and had a dual sub configuration in the LR but really don't have the room for the extra cabinet. Yesterday, I removed the plugs and reinstalled the second driver and the other two passive radiators. Now I'm back to my original design with two active drivers and 4 passives in the single cabinet and the results are absolutely astounding. It sounds so much better. I wouldn't do it any other way. If I were to build a second cabinet, I would order two more drivers, 4 more passives, and build a duplicate. I would probably put each cabinet on a single 1450 amp. One important note on the equipment setup with my design is that I have the preamp set to send everything from 40 hz and lower to the sub. I tried to bump it up to 60 hz but the bass isn't as clean. My big mains can easily handle everything down to the 40 hz anyway. For all you looking to buy one or more of these Soundsplinter drivers, you won't be disappointed. If they don't sound good enough for you, that's an indication you didn't build the box right or don't have it powered correctly. I've now had 5 or 6 rebuilds with different drivers and the Soundsplinter still remains the King! Mike is the best and most responsive driver supplier I've ever had to had the pleasure of working with! Cudos to the Soundsplinter products and the awesome support! This subwoofer is for sale now at $2,350 with two QSC RMX 1450 amps or $1,550 without them. Houston pick up only. I want to build a bigger one now and don't have room in the living room for both. 281-948-4270 Mike Cason

    RLP-15

Does anyone know how to clean the cones on the new RLP-15's without tarnishing the logo? I've just received a couple of new drivers from Mike and after touching the cones, I'm leaving marks on them. I tried wiping with a dry cloth but it seems to make them worse. I'm leaving a dust trail where I wipe. Thanks in advance..... Mike I just heard from Mike @ SoundSplinter and thought some of you may benefit from his reply: On cleaning the cone, I would suggest dampening a cloth with a bit of water and wiping in a spiral motion around the entire cone to clean it. For stubborn stains, you could first dampen the cloth with armor-all and wipe in a circular motion, followed immediately by a wipe with a seperate cloth dampened only in water. The cones are the same brushed aluminum material that they have always been, chemically annodized to stain them black.

Is 1500 watts too much for an 18" RL-P?

It could be costly to overamp your drivers. They are rated up to 1000 watts. I overamp on purpose to hear the clean crisp lows at a low volume in my home theater and usually leave the gains at full, and reduce them when I change music videos and movies if necessary. I'm running 2 bridged QSC amps at 1450 watts each per driver. (two drivers in the enclosure). My wife switched movies while I was out of the room and Jurassic Park 2 was her choice which has some outstanding bass and thumps. I lost both drivers by the time I was able to get to the living room and shut the gains down. Mike is shipping me two more RLP-15's that I've purchased and I've installed serious heavy duty partitioning between the upper and lower drivers now. If one amp clips and blows one driver, the other one shouldn't bottom out. This will essentially give me dual subwoofers, one stacked on the other inside the same cabinet. The cabinet is now up 245 lbs. with all of the extra materials and drivers. The amps are remote. Be sensible with your power. These are the finest drivers I've ever had the privilege to use and have had them in my cabinet for two years now, but all it takes is one mistake. This makes rebuild #5 since I started the sub project 4 years ago. I've updated the Photobucket album with the latest on page 2. Enjoy

    Has anyone bought an RLS?

I thought the Q was too high at .9 for the RLS with the passive radiators. I just heard back from Mike and he agreed. I'm going to replace the RLP's with the same drivers. I'm thinking about replacing the wife, but I think it would be easier to just keep the gains down and it will be a whole lot cheaper than replacing her! This sub sounds so clean with the RLP's. I've decided to build a custom cabinet for the RLS now that my electrical truck restoration project is over and I have my shop back. Kids just have to have something to do, at any age!
  25. mfishmike

    Has anyone bought an RLS?

Robert, What do you think about having a pair of these monster 15" RLS in place of the RLP's? I'll install a divider between the top half of the cabinet and the lower half. That will give me two passive radiators per driver and I can still use the cabinet as is and I have two separate amps driving each driver. The cu. ft. of each cabinet will be around 2.25 to 3 per half. Thanx in advance....
