Looking for new system for my s10

I have heard good things about the dcons and the price is right that is for sure, but how would the SQ of them compare to the daytons? I know not to many people here have experience with the Dayton RS line, but maybe a few of you do. I know they sound great and get decently loud, but haven't ever heard the dcon line so I am unsure. The dcon is almost 3db more sensitive then the daytons so the extra power handling of the daytons doesn't matter much. I would like them to be able to play to at least 80hz, as I won't have anything special upfront. As far as the FI X woofer goes, it is priced similiar to dcon with similiar specs. I had a black friday X woofer and it was decent but the SQ of it wasn't anything special when I swapped it out for my old boston G5. Not sure if the new line of X's are differant or not.
  2. I recently bought a 2000 s10 from my grandma. It was my grandpa's truck who passed away over a year ago. It has less then 40K miles on it and hadn't been driven more then 200 miles in the last 4 years. Anyways, I've been thinking about a new system for it. I pictured in my head that it would be cool to build a shelving unit above the sub box in the back of the s10 (extended cab with 3rd door). Would include two open bins on either side of truck, with open space in between with metal rack to bungie to. Not sure if you can picture that but I think it would be useful. I've narrowed it down to using woofers no bigger then 10", due to height. Currently I have a 12" xcon in my car it sounds awsome. It replaced a Death Row 12 and I could notice the differance in sound quality between the two. I want to go with a SQ oriented subwoofer, but not SQ install. Before the xcon was gifted to me, I almost purchased two Dayton RSS265HO woofers. I have heard them and they sound awsome. Real defined bass and dig pretty deep in small ported boxes. The Hivi SP10 subwoofer is another decent ten. It works in a very small ported box as well and is on sale for a decent price. I have considered the dcon aswell as the FI X sub. Thought I would ask on here and get other opinions for some good SQ based 10" woofers that will work in relatively small ported boxes. I'm looking for at least 2 tens (to help with port length for small tuned boxes) but will also consider 3 tens. I do not really want to break $150 for each woofer, but other options will be considered. Again, this won't be a SQ install, but I like having SQ based drivers in the install. For power, I won't run more power then 1000 watts. Probably will be less even. All I'm looking for is a decently loud system that sounds good. I will build everything myself.

Looking for new system for my s10

Thanks for the offer man!!! I will have to pass though as I really want to stick with drivers no bigger then 10's.

Looking for new system for my s10

I thought about the Q. It is a good driver just a little more then I want to spend on one driver, and I am looking for a little more output then one Q will give me. Saving space really isn't an issue, just height for the sub box is. The storage bins and shelving unit will span the width of the inside of truck. So the subwoofer box can too.
  5. I haven't seen much on center consol builds and what I have found people seem to frown on them, but my brother has always wanted to build a custom center consol for his truck. Its a 2006 Chevy Silverado extended cab. He now has my old equipment and we are going to start on it. The sub will be a 12" death. It will fit between the two front seats, firing towards the rear of the cab. The center consol will be built all the way to the bottom of the dash, so the required airspace won't be a problem. The only thing I'm really not sure on is how to run the ports. We could build it so that the port either fires towards the driver side/passenger side of the truck, or both. Would have the subwoofer firing towards the rear of the cab and the ports exiting in the front cause anything wierd to happen? Would it even matter? This build isn't just for the sub though, there will be cup holders in it, a storage area with closing lid, a vertical rifle mount on the passenger side for his AR15 etc... Just wondering about the porting situation is all? Any ideas or considerations would be great!!

    Center Consol Build

It took a little longer then expected, but my brother and I finished his truck stereo. The center console came out great!!!! My brother did almost all of the fab work, as I was busy with school and couldn't help much. We decided to go with a sealed enclosure for the death row at about 1.5 cu ft. It sounds fantastic in his truck. I wouldn't hesitate to run them in sealed boxes. His front stage consists of aura sound buyouts and vifa tweets with the madisound XO for them. Here are some pics of the build. Took a couple weeks to do everything. The box itself is in 3 parts. The enclosure for the sub, then the separate piece with cup holders, and the top piece that houses the enclosure from the stock center console. The subwoofer just fit perfect for the width requirement between the two front seats. The XO for front speakers Modified the stock tweeter mount to fit the new tweeter. The rockford amp is under the rear seat where stock jack was good finished pic

    Center Consol Build

Thanks for compliments. Basically just took it piece by piece. Had to re-cut alot as the sides for box enclosure are slanted inwards at angles, and the top piece from old center consol is framed in so it all looks flush. Again, I didn't do too much of the fab work, my brother did. It was just all my older equipment given to him and he made it all work. Will never be able to go back to stock however as we did butcher his stock center consol to get the cup holders and such out of it. As well as hack off all the metal brackets for his top lid. It sits quite a bit higher then the stock consol did, but is way more comforatable height I think now.

Center consol box build...just a few questions

Overall we are both very happy with the results. He doesn't currently have a second amplifier for his front stage, but rca's are ran already as he will upgrade in the future. This is mostly his camping/fun rig and doesn't hardly drive it. The front speakers sound very good for what they are. total cost for those including XO was around $70 I believe. I have the same aura woofers in my car but paired with some TB tweets in the dash. I think they sound really well considering they are only $12 a woofer. Next project will be his car but not sure when that will be.

    Upgrade to Xcon!!

Thanks for compliments on the box!! I was choosing between a white port or red port. Glad I went with Red, it is dead sexy with the XCON in there. I just need to go back and touch up a few spots on the port rim with red, as my razor blade cut into the enamel and flaked some off. Other then that, it went great. I won't be to scared to go with carpet in the future. I like it much better then painting the whole box.

    Upgrade to Xcon!!

So for xmas this year, santa was nice enough to get me a new Xcon and a Sundown SAZ-1500d v2. I previously had a Death row 12 running on a rockford amp. It sounded pretty good to me. Thought it was decently loud and hit the lows well. That was until the Xcon was in my trunk running off the sundown. I only have it set around 800 watts (electrical kinda weak) and it is louder then the Death Row was, definately alot cleaner, and hits the lows way better. Both the boxes were tuned to about 30hz. I love the Xcon, and can see what all the hype was about. They are phenomal sounding woofers, and get pretty loud. Can't wait till I can run some more power to it. Anyways, here are some pics. It took me a while to actually finish the box, which I did last weekend, but has been in my car for about 2 months now. All edges have a 1/4" roundover on them, and the port has 1/2". I just didn't take pics of that part of work. The box is 2.2 cu ft @ 30hz, with 37.5^2 inches of port. This was my first carpet job and I like how it came out.

    Upgrade to Xcon!!

Thanks guys! I had a blast working on this project. There is a retarded seam on the bottom of the box that is out of sight, which I knew before hand to leave a flap of carpet unglued but as I was gluing sure enough I just glued that first bit all the way. Oh well, everything else came out great on it I think. I will post up more pics of my car and install when I get more pictures. As far as a video, not sure if I can get one as I do not have anything to take video with. Anyway, thanks for the compliments!!!

Death Row in a Sealed Box?

My old Death Row has been sitting around for a while not doing anything. I decided to give it to my brother and was wondering what the downsides would be to trying to run the Death Row in a Sealed Box? I know it is recommended ported, but the proper room just isn't there. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Death Row in a Sealed Box?

The box will be around 1.6 cu ft with bracing. Maybe a little less, but not much. Thanks for all the replies Tony Nelson

Center consol box build...just a few questions

I have talked to him about it. I think we will try to port to the rear, underneath the sub. We have just been busy with other projects and me with school. Almost finished with a 15" subwoofer project for his house. I will keep this thread updated when updates actually do come, or if I have any questions or ideas for you guys.

    Shop Owners/Employees, what's up?!

One of the local shops here (Aspen Sound) really isn't bad. I can go in there and bullshit with them. They are pretty knowledgable and don't ever try to sell me anything. I even talked the manager into selling me an alpine PDX-4.100 for $200 (their price was $650). I didn't even have to try very hard. I didn't end up getting it though because our best buy had them closing out for $150 So ya I suppose it just depends on the shops around you.

Center consol box build...just a few questions

Thanks for the replys. We were planning on tuning this low (28-30hz). The death row would be seeing about 1000 watts. It might be tough to route the port to the back, but depending on how high he wants to build it, we could always just slot port underneath the sub, firing towards the rear. The box should be pretty sturdy, as it will be 3/4 mdf and then covered with 1/2 some sort of nice wood, and then staind very dark, almost black most likely. I might try to sketch it up for you guys to see what we are thinking, but I haven't used those types of programs much so it might be shitty. In my head I was thinking about ending up with a big null or dead spot right around the listening area if the ports exited in the front and the sub in the rear, but I wasn't completely sure. Keep some thoughts coming, they are great. I will talk to my brother some more and see what he wants to do. Thanks for all the help. Tony Nelson
  20. Tomarrow I will build a new box for my new Xcon 12. I have two designs to pick from, one will be 2 cubes at 30hz and other will be 2.4 cubes at 30hz depending how much room I want to give up. (or anywhere in between I suppose) When I first got the Xcon, I put it in the box my Death Row was in. About 2.1 cubes at 31 hz, with 25^2 inches of port. There was definately some chuffing going on. My new box I want more port area. Max height of port will be 12.5 inches (14inch max height for box). Will either do 2.5 or 2.75 inch wide, for 31.25^2 in or 34.38^2in. Will either of these help with the port chuff I experienced with my old box? I know the bigger the better usually, and I can certainly fit the larger port. I will round over inner port entrance and also the exit. Can't do any kerfs though. Just looking for some final input before the dust flies tomarrow morning

    Box Carpet?

I'll be building a new box this weekend for my new Xcon 12. I have seen quite a few boxes with black carpet and white ports lately, and I really do like how they look. So I was gonna try one myself. Parts Express has some black carpet. One has a latex backing and the other one doesn't. Is there a plus to one over the other? Should I be looking else where for carpet? What have you guys used? I've never done carpet, just textured paint, and want something differant. I am just unsure what to get. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tony Nelson

That was one of the videos I watched. Good explanation.

    Box Carpet?

I will have to check out walmart for sure. The only carpeted boxes I have seen have been pre-fabs. So when I think of carpet, thats what I see. I would need to see the other type to know exactly what it is. I have watched a few videos and read some write ups, but another one certainly wouldn't hurt!!! That would be great. Thats what I have read so far, but also if its too thin and stretchy it can tear easy??? Thanks for the info so far!!!

BUILD LOG Explorer limo 6 IB3s walled 300 cubic feet 50"x12"x3

With that much space, why not use some Mael-X 21's. 4 of those with 5kw I would imagine would get close to your goal. And would take up way less space.
  25. I am curious whether or not a 220 Amp alternator would support a Sundown Saz-1500d v.2?
