  1. Question, Since The dmm didn't work, I obviously didn't tune my amp really yet, so just wondering, when you guys tune your amps about how far is the gain knob? approximately. I know it is different for everyone but I'm just wondering about how far up it usually is after you guys tune them. 1/2.. 3/4 almost all the way up? estimate of the knob for gain lol.

You use the dmm to set the gains by turning them to the voltage you are looking for. See this: Setting gains

  2. Alright so I just got my Sundown SAX 1200 in the mail friday and I was going to wait for my Kinetik battery to get here ( this friday a week later ) before hooking it up at all.. But today I was just dying to hear it because its so hard to wait.. So I went ahead and hooked it up using the old wires that were in from my old crappy sony 1000w max 500wrms walmart amp, Well when I hooked it up and I put the gain at maybe 3/4 or a little under and was listening to it, I turned the little bass knob up and once it got to about half way up, anything above half on the bass knob didn't even make it louder, almost like it is at its limit.. but can it be at its limit at 3/4 on amp and 1/2 of that on the knob?..

I'm hoping that I will surely get more out of it once its got the extra battery and new wiring?.. but will it? Right now it sounds basically just as loud as the stupid walmart amp got and it sucked.

Currently when i ran it, it was hooked up with 8 awg wire from stock walmart starting battery back to the amp with my stock alt ( honda civic around 70amp) and the big 3 done..

Will it give out more power once I wire up the second battery in back near the amp and also 4 awg wire ran from front to back instead of the 8 awg that is in there now? It has to get louder..?...... :ughdunno:

The knob doesn't seem to do anything after a few clicks, but it does. If you play a tone while the dmm is hooked up you will see the voltage increase or decrease depending on how you turn it. It maxes at what the amps gain voltage is set at. I think mine goes from like 14 volts at min to 44 volts at max, Which of course is where I set the gain at for max voltage. Im thinking its not as audible do to sensory overload. I can hear a difference in mine but only on certain songs.

  3. Its not on the money but it does show how to get the most bang for your buck. So the numbers would just be a bit smaller if measured properly, but 1-18 should always have more cone area then 2 -12's for example; and this is what it shows. Its a generalized chart for comparisons.

  4. No, the full setting means NEITHER crossover is used. Full means full frequency band is passed through to the speakers. As I said, you cannot use both the highpass and lowpass at the same time. So you use the lowpass at 3k for the mids on channels 3/4, then use the subsonic filter (because that's separate from the hpf/full/lpf switch) as the high pass filter on the bottom end for the mids.

Got it! Thanks again! Not sure when I'm going to install it. Reconing to 15's so my cargo area is gonna completely change.

  5. Ok, so Highs settings are correct. 12db-24db based on sound

Mids, Channels set to Full. HPF at 80 and LPF at 3000 but still set the SSF to 80? I don't understand what you mean? I get that they were reversed. I don't understand this: "high pass filter at 80 hz, lowpass at 3000. For those you use the subsonic as the highpass filter at 80 hz. You can't use both the regular lpf and hpf at the same time."

Are you talking about running the fronts at HPF setting at 3000hz and rears at HPF setting too? Then just using the SSF for the 80hz crossover point? I thought the full switch setting was so you could use both HPF and LPF at the same time? So confused right now. lol

Highs set by ear. What about power to the mids though? Just slowly turn the gain up until I hear distortion then back it off?

Picture of amp so I can actual look at it while I read and understand: Highs ch 1/2 - Mids ch 3/4

  6. Never ran active in my life so I have some questions

    Amp is a SAX-100.4

    Comps are the Cresendo CCX65.

They are rated at 100 rms a side. Doing this passive is easy, but I am wondering how to split the power levels between the mids and the high's. 50/50? 75/25? Or even 99/1? (heard the tweeters are kinda bright lol)

When setting gains if I want say 75 watts on the rear channels I'd play 1000hz test tone. Hook the dmm to 1 rear channel and turn the gain till the dmm reads 17.32 volts correct? So that should be 75 watts per channel. ( 4 ohm load )

I plan on crossing the mids and highs at 3000hz, so should I still use the 1000hz test for setting the gains on the highs respective channels? If not what tone for the highs?

    Crossover settings:

    Fronts: (highs)

Set to HPF. So would I set the hp filter to 300hz and use the x10 correct. Subsonic filter at the same 300hz setting? And 12db or 24 db for this cross?

    Rears: (mids)

Set to full. I wanna cross at 80hz so LPF set to 80hz. HP set to 300hz x10. 12db fall off, subsonic set at 80hz?

Setting correct? After that its just a lot of fine tuning to get it where everything flows well and sounds good. Any good songs for this or even test tracks?

    Ok gurus, go to work!

Thanks for the knowledge in advance. :drink40:

  7. So - I thought I'd come back after building the box and let you guys know how it worked out.

    IT !@#$ING SLAMS

I ended up netting .75 cubes @ 36 hz and I love it. Now I want more of these.

What happened to not liking the high tuning? You said you didn't like 34hz then went with 36hz. What made you change your mind? And where is a video! :)

  8. For daily the 15 should get louder then an 8 due to cone area alone. Like stated above, you can't compare an spl setup against a daily setup.

If you want loud and some flex get the 15. But no way are you gonna get a 150 out of it in a daily setup. Not even close to a 150.

For a high spl daily setup check out BanginGmc's setup. 2 15's, 2 strapped Sundown 3500's, 5 batteries total, and a HO alt. All in a small Pickup truck and he is doing 153.x or something like that.

That setup to reach those numbers cost more then my setup and Explorer are worth combined. Sealed he did a 150.8 at the windshield..... in a TINY cab. Hope that helps put things into perspective for you.

  9. For 1000 watts, just do the big3 in 0 ga. and use 0 ga for power wire from batt to amp.

    x2

If you are dead set on that amp it will be fine. Just set the gains for 1000 rms and you are good to go.

  10. Great read! And another point to mention, Asphalt based "dampeners" smell like a freshly paved road. Not something I wanna smell every time I am in the car. Real hot days and the smell is even worse! I don't care what they claim. When I had some the smell never went away!

Don is the man and I use his products! Wont use anything else as long as he is around! :drink40:

  11. I would upgrade and amp the rears if people are in the back a lot. Might be ok with with 25rms on the backs cause the fronts will be pretty loud. But when you have 2 18's beating your head in 2 feet away I'm not sure if 25 rms would be enough. I ran 2 RE XXX 18's in a 2 door SUV and it was stupid loud. No rear fills at all and from the back seat most music was unheard during heavy bass hits. I was also firing up and porting back and the subs were about 6" from the back of your head.

How much power will the XXX be seeing?

  12. haha! This is the kinda stuff I do for fun just to mess with people!

    3 examples:

    1. Saw a turbo badge at walmart that was the same font as the Explorer badge on my ride. So I slapped it on the back for a few weeks and had people asking me about it all the time. Was so funny! Some people actually believed me. At heavy traffic times my buddy Luke would roll the window down and make the BOV noise for me.

    2. When I had my Wrangler, I always had the top off in the summers. So as another gag I picked up one of those windshield sun shades and would put it on when I was in public, with the top off! Doing it at walmart was the best. I'd watch people taking cell pics all the time. lol

    3. Luke was one of the first people to get the Scion XB ( 1st gen ) in this area. Lady at the gas station never seen one and was really curious. After 20 mins we had here 110% convinced it ran on Water and had 300 hp. She said she was headed to home to talk to her husband about buying one for herself. lmao

The last one was kinda mean, but she double parked so she had it coming.

  13. I have a silverado extended cab and was wondering how you guys think this would sound with 2 ssd 10" powered by 900 watts rms @ 2 ohms

    http://subthump.com/Chevrolet-GMC-Sub-Boxes/Silverado-Sierra-Extended-Cab/99-06-GM-Extended-Cab-Dual-10-Downfire-With-Amp-Space.html

The volume is more than what is recommended for the subs, would that be bad?

No clue how it would sound. I'm sure it would be fine though. Bigger box just means you need less power to get it to perform. Fi says .2-.4 per sub. Sub displacement is .12. So the sub will see . 58 cubes. Not that much bigger. You should be just fine running 450 to each.
