    blowthrough comp setup

I was just looking at the images, and it appears I could get maybe an inch or so in height, but I don't have one on hand to test. Yea it is. Given my location and lack of competitors it shouldn't take too many shows to qualify for finals in order to go for the big one. Once I qualify on the SPL side I'll just finish the year in SQ to save money, except for state finals. I wish I could have made freezefest, but the truck is in pieces audio wise. We went to Vinny last summer and that was a good time. Long trip though (10 hours), so not sure we'll do it again. Save the long trip for finals That is a very good question and I haven't seen anything in the rules that would say 'no'. It has the same basic class structure and rules as the regular SPL, except it must be on music and is a 30 second run. And of course it is measured outside the vehicle.

    blowthrough comp setup

I'm really considering using Fi subs for a new comp setup. Vehicle is a full size pickup, so it will be a blow through solution. The primary question is, which sub(s) to go with. Goals: 150db at headrest, 130db outside on music. It will be entered in MECA's spl and park and pound format. P&P being the 130db outside goal. The two goals are the max points I can attain for what I'm looking for. Obviously if it is higher that's fine. One individual at the 2012 finals did a 155/129 on 4 speakers in a wall (don't know brand and I think they were 15's). I was originally thinking of a single 18, but I'm not sure that will get there. Also, if possible, I'd like to keep the box height to no higher than the top of the bed ( 19" outside dimension ). My next thought was a pair of BTL 15's, either N2's or N3's. If I can do it on a pair, all the better, since they won't really be daily music subs (except for some occasional fun, as I'll have another sub for SQ duties) so I don't want to drop 3k on subs that'll get used a few times. Power and electrical will be acquired based on what subs are chosen. So with that in mind, is this obtainable with a pair of 15's or asking a bit much? I wouldn't mind 18's, but I don't think I can angle them enough to fit my height requirement, which is a shame 'cause the cost difference is negligible. Although they could be up/down firing in a bandpass enclosure... Thoughts?

    blowthrough comp setup

Best Of Best Of Show. combination of SPL, P&P, ""SQL"", Install and RTA. Last year's winner has a really nice escalade walled. almost maxed the two spl parts, does really well in install (77) but SQ is his weakness. So if I can come match his install and spl I have a good chance of grabbing it this year. Most SQ folks don't even attempt bobos.

    blowthrough comp setup

I'm not really concerned with whatever class I'm in. Honestly I'm going for bobos this year My truck is mostly SQ focused but I need the 150/130 for overall (in addition to the other stuff of course). I'd rather do 2 18's w/4k and accept the enclosure height over spending another $3k for 2 more 15's and associated amps. I intended to build a custom tonneau cover, but I could accommodate another setup if needed. I notice in your sig you have 3 18 SP4's. My first modeled design was a single 18 SP4 in a bandpass box
  5. I agree with that too, in which case those customers should be given a list of recommendations and that's fine. Most manufacturers give recommendations based on a common denominator. The average guy that wants it loud and wants to throw a lot of power at it. JL does that for example. Not all of us want to put 1000's of watts of power all the time at 40 or 60hz
  6. I see lots of high end subs that the manufacturers list T/S parameters for. It shouldn't be that hard. Telling me what to use from a predescribed list assumes you know exactly what I want. I'm sure Nick is a genius sub designer. That's fantastic. But seeing as I didn't design the sub, I'd like to know what their specs are at a basic level. T/S aren't everything, but it gets me going on what I want to look at. quick and dirty is WinISD, sometimes bassbox pro for fun, but for most stuff it is HornResp. Sure it is free, but it will model almost any enclosure you can possibly think of. However that isn't the point. A predescribed list also won't tell me what to use in a cetain vehicle, with certain listening requirements either will it? My research today on this very topic (IA and T/S) gives me the conclusion that they don't care to sell to a customer that has even a basic knowledge of such things. That's ok, that's their perogative.
  7. all correct and I understand all that. However it will also tell me things like excursion, impedence curve, group delay, frequency response (albeit withough reflections and such), and other things which quickly tell me if a given choise is even worth experimenting with.
  8. Modeling is a lot cheaper and faster than building and rebuilding. It would also allow me to model alignments other than ported, such as various horn alignments.
  9. I've been looking for specs myself and came across this old post, which is really disturbing. "optimum performance" for what? power handling? SPL? LFE? SQ? One optimum box size for say a civic isn't going to be as optimum as one for a suburban. An optimum box for a SPL competitor is totally different than an optimum box for a SQ competitor.

    imaging help

If you want to keep up with subs at 150db, no, nothing will do that realistically. Then again, anyone that is listening to music continuously at those levels probably isn't "listening" to any music at all, they are just listening to bass pounding their ear drums into submission.

There is no reason you can't have loud and sq. a HAT team member does 150's and yet it is a SQ setup by design. He is also the sq+ champ multi years in a row. During sq judging he just turns down the bass. So yes it can be done. My setup is four speakers up front (2 8" midbass and 2 3.5" full range) and will have a blow through in the near future. As one of the first posters said, go with a good 6.5" component setup up front, ditch the rears and go from there.
  12. That would be great. I was hoping this season would be mostly about getting that kind of feedback. Real honest criticism so I can improve. I had planned on attending the ifo show coming up in September. However if you are going to have one or two before the state fair deal I'll do my best to my best to make those in addition to the triple pointer. I'm in a class I can't realistically be competitive in due to it being a two seat, but at the moment I don't care and I'm going to go to finals anyway. For next season I should have my install done and a new blow through setup so I will jump in with the big dogs and do xtreme sq+
  13. Sad. Seems to be a growing trend. There is a thread going on the USAC forum about lack of sq. I'll make another show and double class it to qualify for finals and then decide what to do. I can get to finals without ever having it judged :/

Depending on how well i do, your shows alone may be enough to get me to finals this year and I started really late!

    Hello from Oklahoma

Hello all. Joining in from the Tulsa area. Vehicle is a 1987 Chevy truck with an in-work system consisting of Hybrid Audio speakers and Tru amplifiers. Just getting started competing this year, but I'm the SQ game. However I'm toying with the idea of doing a blow through setup later this year, so we'll see where that takes me. Other than the audio, the truck has an aluminum headed 383 that I built last year. HP is ~500. Also got the trans rebuilt and the rear end is scheduled to be rebuilt in July. After that, I'll be taking it to the track for some fun on occasion. I'm also hoping to get into Hot Rod magazine's Drag Week this year which begins and ends in Tulsa.

Aho from up in Guthrie (IIRC)? I was hoping he was going to do a MECA show this year.

    Hello from Oklahoma

SuperMod Q. Although I'm kind of forced into it due to my dash. I started working on a custom dash before I got talked into doing audio competitions. I experimented with some 2 seat stuff, but this vehicle is just not built for it, too wide and too close to the dash. So, I'll finish out the season in usaci, then switch to MECA next year where I can do 1-seat. Maybe toy with the idea of moving up to XTreme SQ+ for 2013, as that is my only 1-seat option, but there are few people there and the ones that are are the top dogs. I don't know if IASCA is even around here as you can't find anything online. Their calendar on their website is next to worthless. Thanks and I'll be at your show this weekend. I'm the one that asked about a tent yesterday thanks (and to everyone else). I'll get a build log started when I get some time. I've been spending most of my evenings in the garage changing stuff. The interior looks like hell, but it'll have some music for this weekend's show in OKC. Most of this year for me is going to be learning, learning and more learning with the idea of hitting 2013 pretty good and shooting for a placing at some finals.

    68 Chevelle build

Nice to see you do something different. I've been to many, many, many chevelle shows (my dad had an orange 67 SS that he showed for many years) and by and large they are a sea of "stock" red or blue cars. Don't get me wrong, they are all nice and I appreciate someone's desire to restore a car, but you can only look at so many red/blue chevelles with stock engines, stock interiors, stock wheels and tires, etc. before you never need to see another again.

I'll be there! Still making last minute changes, but I should make it regardless.
