  1. Can't wait to get out there, Steve...

But first, my new arrival. Beware, subwoofer porn to follow. I know most people have seen the EVIL18, but I am going to post my pics anyway.

Holy Sweet Mother of Bass this thing is Huge. I have to commend SSA on their packaging. This thing could serve as a bomb shelter for small animals.

    And introducing EVIL18:

Once again, I am amazed by the sheer size and presence of the thing. Granted this is my first comp level sub. Here are some pics what I think are the much talked about upgraded leads:

And it wouldn't be a complete post without my comparo shot. Old sub vs. new sub:

Other than the U.S. vs. Portugal game (U.S.A!, U.S.A.!, U.S.A.!), I plan to spend most of the weekend on the enclosure and will probably pick up a battery or two.

  2. So, I got a great deal on these JBL twelves. I think I may use these instead of the EVIL 18...

    12's

Just kidding....Those are the old subs.

I ripped out the old sub enclosure/amp rack. While dismantling it, I realized what crap it was...I had cut corners, skimped on quality of materials and workmanship. I will not make the same mistake, again. I have to admit while looking at some of the build logs I thought to myself, "Do I have the patience/conviction to build to the same quality as what I am looking at?" Well, I will certainly fight my tendency to lose focus near the finish. Here is all the hardware and wiring I had cobbled together for the old sub box. The Mc's and the XDP-210EQ(for now) will be the only carry-overs.

  3. I am running a Mechman 220 on my 2007 Honda Civic. While the voltage does fluctuate due to the PCM controlled voltage, I usually see at least 14.0 volts. I have not encountered any problems with my current set-up, which draws maybe 150 amps at full tilt. I see around a .3 volt drop with only the starting battery. The real test will be the new install which will pull 450+ amps. The alt will be backed up by a couple of group 31's or more...

  4. Finally had some time to work on he car, so bye-bye back seat.

    BackSeat

    BackSeat2

    BackSeat3

I can see lots of sound deadening in my future. There is a lot of ring to all the metal panels. There is also a ton of road noise that the back seat used to suppress. There are a few welded-in brackets and explosive devices that I will have to build around, as there is no way in hell that I am going to mess with them. Luckily, with the side panels removed, I gained more width. So, I can afford to lose a little depth. I will probably build some kind of panel to seal off the trunk and cover up said artillery devices. I have some left over NVX deadening from my door panels, but I don't think it will be enough. I don't really subscribe to the 25% coverage rule. It seems that everyone has good things to say about SDS. Any others to throw into the mix?

P.S. Pay no attention to the rat's nest of wiring. That will all be redone/modified for the new install.

  5. Yeah, I really wanted to do a trunk build, but I just couldn't figure out how to put an 18 with that size enclosure in the trunk. I am surprised how close in price each woofer size is when you stay within the model line. I already had dual twelves, so I wanted to go a little more extreme. I probably would have gone a different route, if I didn't want to compete..

  6. Work, weather, etc..., have kept me from further progress. I still have to tear out the back seat and rear panels next. I did get familiar with sketchup thanks to the how-to. This is my initial concept:

    EVIL18

I should wind up with at least 8.5 cubes net, tuned to 32hz. I will use some type of 10" flared port. I am worried that 75 square inches of port may not be enough.

  7. Ricksi30, the main restriction in my opinion for SB2 is the subwoofer choice. Single 18, single 15, triple 12's (which seems ideal), quad 10's or eight 8's. 1 alt,15.5 volts, 5 total restricted sized batts or unlimited caps, 1200 rpm, enclosure behind the B-pillar. I would post the table, but I get the feeling it is a no-no. Super stock adds the restriction of below the window line, but goes unlimited in everything else except for 1200 rpm's and 18 volts.

  8. With power cables in hand, I moved on to the alternator install.

Out with the old, in with the new:

Had a little trouble finding a new belt, and oh yeah this happened as well:

It was definitely a tight fit, and the alt required some alterations, but here it is in its new home:

    Gratuitous power cable shots:

And now the new batt all wired up with the new terminals. I did have to dismantle the factory positive to install it onto the new terminal:

  9. I decided to upgrade the terminals for the alternator install:

    batterms

They are Xscorpion terminals, I really like the looks of them. I can see however, that a bigger system would require tool maker type terminals. I didn't ever think I would be using three connection points.

I had originally planned to go with a sundown SAZ2500, but I found a great deal on this beast:

    4500.1d

    4500 2

A little bigger than I planned, but I am sure the EVIL 18 will be glad for the extra power...

I picked up some power cable making supplies from Del City:

    CopperLugs

And tried my hand at soldering lugs onto the cable. It took way more heat than I thought it would...I am surprised I didn't burn the place down...

The factory grounding cable is in the foreground for comparison.

  10. After much deliberation, I have finally laid down the plan for my project build. I planned to do a trunk build, but decided I was trying to stuff to much crap in a very limited space. Deciding to put the enclosure inside the passenger area led me to consider a wall build, but this is my daily driver. So, a below the window line, Super Stock class build this will be. Talk about jumping into the deep end. After torturous deliberations, I decided to go for SB2 and stopped flirting with the idea of ETHOS 15's and committed to an EVIL 18 lildevil.gif. Yes, the wait is long and is killing me, but I still have much to do before it gets here.

    This was the first arrival:

    Goodies

This is my Mechman 220 and 1/0 cable from welding supply.

Picked up a distro block for the front stage:

    distroblock1

Next, was a starter battery upgrade to a group 34(the biggest that will fit) in order to get ready for the AGM freight train:

    DiehardAGM

I was seriously considering picking up a few of these, as they were 141.00 a piece at the time. I have somehow talked myself into going with a couple of XS D3100's. Though, I am still having a hard time pulling the trigger on 700 plus for two batteries.

  11. Thanks for the welcome, ex650. Sadly though, I have cancelled my trunk class build project.

And wait for it....................switched to a non-trunk build. It just doesn't make sense for what I'm trying to achieve. The only things that will reside in the trunk now, will be the batts. Now, I have up to 11 net cubes at my disposal, without walling. I am almost 100% sure it will be a single 18 with a big a** port. Build log to follow soon...

  12. Thanks for responding Quentin and Impious . I understand that this is theoretical modeling. I was just surprised by the results. I expected the 12's to walk away from the single 18. This also does not help in my decision making. The 18 does have a cost advantage, but I can feel the 15's laughing at me...

  13. I picked up a new starting battery today. I replaced my old volcano type battery with a Diehard Gold AGM Group 34. I picked it up for 141.00, now down to 131.00. My research tells me that these are rebranded DEKA's, which should be good quality. It seems that Group 31's are the rule for battery banks, but I can't squeeze in three batteries. Would 3 diehard gold group 34's plus one up front be enough reserve for 5-5.5 kW? I know XS's are king, but I need to save where I can. I will also have a MECHman 220A installed as soon as I get in new battery terminals. P.S. Anyone have personal experience with diehard gold AGM's?

  14. This is a WINisd plot of my final 3. It is comparing 3 ETHOS 12's against an EVIL 18 and a pair of ETHOS 15's. The ETHOS enclosures were taken directly from some of Quentin's suggestions, and the EVIL 18 was a shot in the dark based on my space limitations. How accurate is WINisd in calculating real world SPL? Based on the modeling an EVIL 18 equals three ETHOS 12's at peak tuning (hard to believe); the ETHOS 15's win all...The EVIL 18 is pitted against the three ETHOS 12's for SB2 class reasons, the pair of ETHOS 15's is for I don't give a damn what class I compete in reasons.

  15. Wait, I have to put on my nerd glasses to read this post...JK. I knew about the second definition, but not the first. In all seriousness, it is a very distinctive name. It stands out against names like LVL 3, 9515, ZVx... I was hoping to jump in before the price change, but I still have not made the decision.
