  1. My current setup is ok, but I think it is time to take things to the next level. My current project is upgrading to an active front stage. Later I hope to add another 12" GCON or maybe upgrade to a 15" XCON. Anyway, I got my HU and I am waiting for my seas 7" woofers to arrive. As soon as I get paid I will be ordering the tweets. Then the fun begins!

I installed the 80prs and ditched the passives on my entry level BA comps. After an hour or so of tweaking The sound is WAY better! I am not going to spend too much time dialing them in since I will be replacing them soon, but I want to get used to the control of active tuning...I love it!

Here are a few pics. I measured for space, but wanted to make sure I could fit the new drivers, so I mocked them up with cardboard to test fit before I spent the money. All that did was make me even more excited for this upgrade! :) Waiting is the hardest part.

    Here it is so far:

I am really looking forward to the new setup. I am excited and nervous to try my hand a fiberglassing. I will update as things progress.

  2. I knew I was going to have to go with a tweeter that would play low but hadn't come across the HDS's. Thanks for the recommendation. I will be posting pics and feedback as this phase of my build progresses. It will take a couple more months to complete I'm sure but I am excited to learn and step up the sq of my system.

Thank you M5 and lithium for all the help and guidance

  3. I keep thinking of other things or places I could move the woofer but am not familiar enough with that level of customization to feel confident doing it.  This being my first attempt at putting together a nice sounding system I know it will be a learning experience anyway and I really don't want get into something I can't fully recover from.

The real frustrating part is I am just flipping a coin and hoping for the best with the drivers I pic. I don't have a way that I am aware of to audition anything other than big box stuff. I have learned that I like the sound of a paper cone and soft tweeter so I guess its not all bad...

I am looking for drivers that will fit, then matching a tweeter that will play low enough to blend well when I cross it over. Is there any other factors I should be considering? I feel like I am making this too easy. I realize there is a learning curve but I don't have money to burn. If I'm guessing here, which it feels like I am, I would like to make the most educated guess possible.

  4. So I did a bit more measuring and found I have 5.25" depth and just under 7.5" diameter for woofers in my doors.  I will be trying my hand at glassing my a pillars, so I am open to size up to 4" diameter for tweets. I will be positioning them on axis. The problem is that the stock grills are not removable, I can cut and customize some, but the shape of the door panels limit what I can do. So even though I can fit 7" drivers, I can't really get them positioned very well, and quite a bit of the driver will be blocked by the door panel...:( Would it be better to go with 6.5" woofers in this case? What are my options without building new door panels?

  5. If it is purely an aux battery then cca's don't matter and your ah and watt rating is close enough with the xs batteries that there is no reason to go with the 34 over the 51, especially if you aren't playing your system with the car off. I don't know how they get the watt rating on their batteries so I can't comment on that. Still a little confused on that myself :)

  6. 34's and 31's have more lead etc. in them giving higher cca's, and in the case of deep cycles, high rc and 20hr capacity...more power. If you are going to put batteries in the back I would stick with a 51 in the front, mainly for ease of install like bassink stated.

You will not have to worry about your aux. batteries draining your starting battery as long as you isolate them with a solenoid relay or isolator. They disconnect your starting battery from the batteries powering your system when you turn your ignition off, keeping your starting battery from draining.

Be careful running 2k off of a group 51 though, unless your car is running of course, as that will drain your battery pretty fast.
