    Box Building Tips

Ok, today was the first time ina long while that I have built a box away from my old shop. These are a few things I learned / remembered while building a box today. 1. Measure twice, cut once (this goes for the cuts on the woodas well as the overall size of the enclosure). I made a few bad cuts and ended up building one box too large. Grrr. If you are going to cut it wrong, be sure do it larger than what is needed. 2. A pneumatic or electric brad nailer is the way to go! I was doing it the old fashioned way with a hammer and finishing nails. There was some frustration with bent / broken nails as well as the lack of speed. 3. A jigsaw may cut wood, but it is a far cry from a table saw or circular saw. My cuts seemed like I was drunk and swerving all over the place. 4. 3/4" MDF is a lot easier to work with than 1/2" MDF. The preciseness of the cuts as well as the accuracy of the nailing is a lot less critical. I was using 1/2" because of the overall size of the enclosure (.2 cubes). 5. Be careful where you place your caulk gun! It will continue to spew caulk after you lay it down. 6. Try to make all your cuts from the factory cut sides. Anything less would be uncivilized. 7. Make sure you get the kind of caulk that just comes right off the skin. I use Alex Plus and it works great. I have used other stuff that sticks for days no matter what you do short of removing skin. I think that covers the 1st lesson. More to comelater.

    Need Some Advice!

More impessive looking of course! Case in point, look at the Audiobahn AWT series. One of the more heavier subs its SPL capabilities isn't worth anything.

Put the sub in this morning and tried it out in the Saturn. Sounded very decent and a little louder than expected. Once I get an amp for this it is going in the van along with some Treo speakers up front. Should be a nice sounded daily driver system. Hopefully it will be done before Thanksgiving when we have a 5 hour ride to Virginia.

    Need Some Advice!

An XXX12 weighs in at 53 pounds and 9515 was 50 pounds. But my 9515 was a C series. Not sure what they weigh now. So yeah, they XXX is heavier.

    resistance for three subs

The need for a sunsonic filter depends on where your box is tuned to and what music you listen to. The safe bet is have a subsonic filter set around 5 hz below box tuning. For a dialy driver the box is usually tuned to around 35 hz and the subsonic would be set at 30.

    resistance for three subs

Ok, what you are doing is called series-parallel wiring. You series the subs to 8 ohms each, then parallel the 3 subs to achieve your 2.67 ohm load. I would agree with bigger, it is tough to tell how much power the amp is putting out. First, the coils are usually not exactly 4 ohms, they are a tad off. Then you have the in box impendance rise to worry about. But probably on a DX700 you would see 600-650 at 2.67 depending on what the bench test is for 2 ohms.

    new job...wooowhoooo

Last summer I worked as a lumberjack on an army base. It was at Ft. Drum, NY. They had a squad of A-10's. We were at one of the OP's looking into the impact area and some A-10's were doing maneuvers that day. It was unbelievable to see them firing. It doesn't even sound like a machine gun. It was like "BRRRRRAAAAAPPPPPP" and it was a few hundred rounds. Then you would just see clouds of dust from the impacts.

I used to love going down to the harbor. Do they still have the old ship there? Used to rent some paddle boats.

Here is another one. When you are done building your box you can run a flashlight around the seams on the inside of the box to tell where there might be an air leak.

    Box Building Tips

Here is a pic of yesterdays project for me. .2 cubes sealed and will fit under the drivers seat of my wife's Voyager. Right now it is cut out for my Vifa PL 7 but I have a feeling it will end up a Koda in no time. But I thought I would give the Vifa achance first:) Another box tip. While 2 people is not necessary it sure is nice. Also, if no have no sawhorses an old sub box works just fine.

Good tip on the straightedge. Didn't have any clamps though:( Also. A router works a lot better than jigsaws doing the mounting cutouts also.

    Home Audio basics

Ok, the wife wants to get a home theater in the near future. I used to work in a car audio shop that sold home audio as well, but I did not dabble in that at all. Right now what are some quality name brands that are not too much? Thankfully I can get quite a bit of different stuff near dealer cost so that helps. For reciever looking to stay below 750-800 MSRP, dvd player around 350-400 MSRP and who knows what on the speakers:) I am looking at a 5.1 reciever a 5 disk cd/dvd player the speakers to go with it At the moment I am looking at some Integra pieces and for spakers it is a toss up between Paradigm and Phase Tech with Phase Tech having the advantage right now. So for right now what are some quality name brands?

Seas Lotus Ref vs. Focal 165K2P

I had the 165k2's amp with 75 RMS and they sounded great. I did also use a 30 band eq to smoth things out some:) They had great low end extension and the tweets were very nice. In the crossovers I did have the tweets all the way down though. Not sure if they are worth the price though. Note sure on the Seas though, never used them.
