    SQ Three Way Front Stage

I understand there is no absolute when it comes to being the "best", but I don't understand why it such a big deal for someone to voice their opinion. I stated my opinion, give my recommendation, and my reasoning, you either you like it or you don't. For whatever reason several of you seem to dislike Hybrid. You are trying to make them sound bottom end which anyonoe the world knows they are not. You like somthing else better, fine, I personally IMO have yet to find it. Say you want but people in SQ have been choosing Hybrid and continue to do so. There are plenty of great drivers out there, we all know this, and IDC if I like Hybrid because the pretty chrome job on the magnets, if that's what I like so be it. FYI in a blind test, even Focal execs liked the Hybrid audio drivers over their own Utopias. Maybe you personally wouldn't feel the same way, but hey it is opinion. Impious- for you telling me you have never even gotten a demo in a Hybrid vehicle, I don't know why you would even comment. Yes you did say Qts, not Q, my fault, but BL is certainly not the most important number to a midrange, and we all know that T/S parameters are not the best way to judge a speaker, but are good as a general comparison. It seems you have some bias against the company to claim something about a company you have never even heard, for that I am sorry as you are missing out. You said you are trying out some new mids for a new build, hope they work out, and hope you post some build pics on here, and good luck with the build. oh yes, btw I based the response curve of the 12m off the testing from the manufacturer, not zaph audio....I simply trust the manufacturer's posting over some random page you bring up.

Kerfed port box build - Icon 15

Jacob has gotten great results with this kerfed box, I would expect great results from this as well

    12 RE SE 12s

Yeah, that is a concern but I love my wall only incident I've seen with a walled build where the car went through a wreck, the vehicle rolled over several times and the wall kept the roof from collapsing and killing the driver. So I guess if you build it strong enough it can provide safety. sick build though, box looks great, can't wait to see it all finished and with more power! Sundown FTW!

    Welcome to the IHoP

you got that right, of course going out when you're single can be costly too...damn prices of drinks these days... I just hope Brandon Marshall can put up 29 points for me in NFL Fantasy before I go 2-6-1
  5. it sucks, but now you probably end up saving up and trying to upgrade sooner than you had thought!

    How does this look

very nice, remember that output will really depend on how well you seal off that trunk. looks like a great setup though.

lol well congrats to OP for a great sub coming their way!

not saying he doesn't know what he's talking about, but since it sounds like he was really experimenting trying to see what would sound best in his ride, then starting off building a passive xover was probably not the best idea. I will say those speakers are great, not my favorite, even from Focal, but they are nice and also require a lot of eq work and a very dedicated installer to get them to their full potential. of course the whole point in buying the utopias in the first place is because of the 2500 dollar xovers that come with the set.... back to the OP: I'm sure you will love the hybrids, they will have a little more SQ than the Zapco's, but I will tell you the Zapco's will have ability to be cranked on a little harder. i would def. recommend sticking to a more simple set of components that comes with factory passive xovers.
  9. amp is done, and it will probably cost you the value of the amp to have someone repair it for you. I would just start saving for an extra battery and a higher quality amplifier.

never said it was easy, did your friend build his passives or purchase some factory one's? I have seen some amazing custom built passives, and their clarity truly is top-notch. of course I personally am not on that level so I stick to active, cause yes it is much easier to make changes to xover points, eq work is still the same whether your setup is active or passive, but of course if you want to change xover points then you must re-build the passive. that's why you normally only see custom built passives in builds where the installer knows their vehicle, drivers, and what they want quite precisely.

good choice on sub/amp and great electrical to back it!

it would be close, very install dependent, but two 10's would probably be slightly louder. Wasn't even thinking when I said ported though about your truck lol. It is difficult to build a ported wedge box behind seats. It will still get pretty loud to go sealed, especially with a 2000 watt amp. as for going 2-way or 3-way, that's really up to you and how much install work you want to do. I think if you go 2-way and put the mid-woofer in the kicks and the tweets in the dash or even pillars you should be quite happy. they do make pre-fab kicks for your truck, should be able to find them on www.crutchfield.com even ***** ***** is using them. the hybrid clarus are great sounding speakers, and the Morel's will be great SQ speakers as well, the Zapco's will be able to handle more power though and may do better for ya when you want to really crank it up.

    SQ Three Way Front Stage

I'm personally not a fan of the L3, it has at rack record of being known for being very install dependent, and requires much more tuning post-install than the L4. you said Q but actually gave the Qms figure which again hurts the 12m. the Qms or moving mass of the L4 is half of that of the 12m. I have heard both in sponsored team installs that were both top-notch. I spoke with both installers, and also demoed both vehicles. One vehicle was using scanspeak drivers and the other hybrid drivers. the scanspeak driver had a LPF on it at 4khz because it got extremely sharp and unnatural above that range. not a big deal as tweeters are used for that range anyway, but for versatility the L4's ability to play up and through 17khz perfectly clean is an advantage. on the low-end, the 12m drops off pretty hard ~140 hz. and it even struggles at ~160 hz. the 8" drivers used in the scanspeak install were xover at 160 as that was the lowest installer felt was still reproduced efficiently by the scanspeak. the L4 was crossovered down at least to 125 hz in the three team hybrid demo's I got. and one of them had it rolling off naturally on a 12db/slope at 100hz. That is quite impressive for a 4" mid. i say nowhere near the power capabilites because of audible clarity loss and distortion levels of the 12m at higher volumes. The L4's, although recommended to xover at 140 hz at higher levels remains perfectly clean and clear with even more than the rated 175 watts of power. (note at this volume it is hardly an SQ demo, but does show capabilities of the drivers) the L4 is the only midrange on the market to stay within 2 db SPL on the response curve within its recommended xover points or frequency response. the scanspeak, like the average midrange varies by 5db. that is a huge difference. the L4 uses a lighter motor structure and larger magnet resulting in less moving mass and higher control. audiblly the results are a quicker smoother response and the ability to play the very high frequencies. in which are really the advantage in an on-axis install where a tweeter could really be optional. I don't understand why you guys, who to my knowledge, may be wrong and do not want to assume, but to my knowledge are not SQ experts and do not spend much time with SQ. Hybrid has proven itself as a world class audio driver since the beginning of the company. I did extensive research and had the opportunity to get a few demos from many amazing SQ cars, and in the end I chose Hybrid Audio. I will agree that great sounding speakers and what you think the best sounding speakers is very much personal opinion, which is why I have made several recommendations to the OP. IMO Hybrid is and until I find something better to me the best out there. especially for the money. if you disagree and like something fine, but it is quite obvious I can back up my reasoning as is something I have done my research on. I will say I find it funny how when Hybrid Audio is a part of the SSA forum it's a great speaker, and now they are not, everytime I mention it someone that is adament SSA has to try and cut them down. I'm not here to try and influence anyone to feel that what I feel is the best they should also, and I don't understand why you guys are seeming to do just that. BTW: Name what hybrid vehicle any of you have sat in and demoed. Name them, please, I would love to know. I would also love to know what drivers you believe are the best and then show results of any good sized SQ competition in the last few years where they have proven themselves, and dont' give the trophies don't mean anything BS, they aren't everything, but you can def. get an idea of what is worth running and what isn't by going to competitions.
  16. also check that there are no loose power/ground wire freys of wire at the terminals. it's something simple that can screw things up. same for wire freys on the speaker wires at subwoofer or amp terminals.

it's some crazy number of stetsom 16kd's...I believe .25 ohm and yes at 18volts

here's some 6 1/2" component sets I would recommend, and once you invest in some nice speakers, you won't want to listen to anything else. I almost hate listening to music in anyone else's car cause it sounds so inferior to me. lol Hybrid Audio Clarus Zapco Reference DLS Iridium or Nobelium Morel Dotech's Dynaudio mkII's Rainbow Vanadium or Germanium series, SLC's are great too and are a few bones cheaper. lol they do make a 10k set, but not worth it IMO. all above are fantastic speakers, I think you would be extremely happy with any of them, and all would do well for you. all of those companies except for Hybrid make a higher-end component set, but costs gets up around the 800 dollar range. IMO the 500 dollar Hybrids are more fairly compared to those. I would recommend looking into some local shops and see if you can find anyone that carries anything on that list you can listen to. You would probably find somewhere to demo the Zapco or Dynaudio's before anything on the list, as most of those companies aren't carried by your average shop. on the subs, unless trying to save space, go ahead and go ported on those Q's, they are awesome woofers and will remain quite accurate even in ported, and you will most likely appreciate the extra output. what are you thinking on amps?

    old btl vs new ?

Have seen it in two instances. I think the guy puts like 60k on it if I remember. the other time was the kinetik world record team. on one sub with half a coil they burped like a 172. since it was only half a coil it was twice the resistance, and normal power is somewhere around 150k watts I believe. so probably like 75k. that van is a crazy build though. not really my cup of tea, but it is cool someone has done it. BTW i watched them get the world record in person, crazy watching something burp over 180 db's, that's ~ to the shuttle launch, on the launch pad! lol

no, looks right to me, you could also do Quad dual 4's to .5 ohm.

    SQ Three Way Front Stage

Thank you denim, I assume by track record and proven performance you are speaking of Hybrid and the huge amount of trophies and SQ champions that have used the products, and how they were designed with the utmost of critical care by one of, if not the best guy in the business when it comes to SQ. hype is something not proven, Hybrid is proven, the high prices of premium eton, scanspeak, rainbows, focals, dynaudio, that is more hype than anything. I will gladly spend 1k on a full 3-way set from hybrid over the thousands of dollars in which their competitors charge for products that are claimed to even compete. Countless other companies have multitudes more trophies, but it does not matter. As winning trophies based off subjective scores means very little in the real world. Especially when install and set up is far more important. Exactly the same as people trying to call drifting a sport. Not to mention, in reality, very few customers actually care about SQ trophies. In addition, supporting a company who has an employee join up under a fake name pretending to be a customer to push product is not a quality choice in my eyes. wasn't aware someone did that, I wouldn't like that too much either. I'm not saying trophies are most important, but Hybrid has only been around for 3 years, and no one else has won as many trophies as they have in that time span. Not sure what companies you are referring to, maybe DLS in early 2000's before Hybrid existed, and those same people that won those trophies now run Hybrid Audio? hmmmm I like you Denim, and normally you have great input, but on this matter I honestly don't understand what you are trying to accomplish. I am not here to piss anyone off, I simply want to state my case and help the OP in anyway I can. now getting back to some real help. Loud really is all opinion, I mean some people tell me, "man you should hear the stereo that came with my new car it's pretty nice, loud too!" lol I mean all I can do is laugh. On the other hand some people don't think it's loud unless they can be heard from 5 blocks away. You seem to want pretty smooth sound, and smooth sound and the speakers that normally produce it are not meant to get loud. that does not mean they don't have the ability to be able to crank it up when you want. those 8's will do great, you could really find something less expensive to do the job if you wanted to, but if you are going for quality over cost then don't compromise. I have already stated what mids are IMO the best out there. Others to look at that I have heard and really like would be Focal K2 Power series, you'll know them when you see the yellow cones. their utopias are overpriced and honestly I'm not a fan of the sound. for tweeters, I love my Legatias from Hybrid, but CDT also makes a couple nice choices for silk domes. DLS, Dynaudio, and Morel also make some awesome tweets, mids too if you want to take a look. would also help if we knew how much you were looking to spend.

what price range are you looking at? I think you may really like a set of zapco i-force components on a strong 2-channel amp. they have a great open sound, and can also handle a large amount power for those times you feel like cranking it up! let me know your price range and I can make a few other recommendations, I think I asked for that before, but just let me know.

    old btl vs new ?

Adrian- magnet weight is less on newer style than the older style with 3 slugs. newer magnet is much larger diameter around the pole piece though, which actually has more effect than a longer magnet. OP- 2 slug models were really meant for burping, they are shorter and are not meant for as much excursion for playing music. most competitions now, bassrace and bass-boxing are playing music, therefore even if you got an older model then you would want the triple stacked with daily tinsels not the two slug setup for SPL only. djmedik91- if the two 15" BTL's are fully loaded (built for daily use) then I would recommend two 15's over a single 18 any day. more cone area, and higher potential of power handling so potential to be louder. although I have seen a single 18 do over 170db! (wasn't a BTL, but it was a single 18)
  25. Waiting on jacob! lol The end of the month, and no amps, but I 'll wait because it will be worth it! But he did send me my 125.2 already! and trust me as soon as I get them you will see picture's! Because I'm going to gizz on them! lmao! plz take pre-jizz photos.... and steveman, this price is cheap, and I'm surprised they aren't gone already, don't haggle. Sorry I wasn't trying to haggle, I just threw an offer out there for what I had available is all, doesn't matter anyways I found another one somewhere else for 300. Sorry If I pissed you off, it wasn't my goal. lol I wasn't even in a position to be offended, no worries.
