My impressions of the next-gen SI Mag 12

...and yet, we have another question, which could have been unasked, if people read through threads carefully. To answer your question - YES. Playing very high and remaining very clean is one of this sub's fortes.

Mag proto is on its way to Chad Hicks

This weekend my ass is in the my woodshop down here finishing my BIB's, hopefully Hicks can hang onto it until next weekend when I'm back in VA AH! Jim...Jim Jim Jim. You disappoint me. (kidding) Chad can hold onto it for that long if he wants. I was hoping to get it back sooner though. I am with Nick on this one... No kidding though

    Mag review

Please forgive me, but I don't understand how a driver could sound louder being less sensitive. I always thought if you have 500 watts, the 92db driver would get louder than say 89db driver. Can you please explain? Cause right now I am struggling with a 84db DIYMA sub, and it is the cleanest sub I heard, but output is so low, that it's unreasonable and very disappointing. It is in tiny 0.7 cubes, I know, but I am giving it 850 watts, and it still whispers to itself back there. I can't help to think, that the sensitivity was lowered, because the sub was obviously made less rugged, and so it could still take some power without getting itself into distortion/break up and such problems, and also because the sub is designed to be in smaller enclosure.

    Mag review

It sounds excellent, that Mag is able to go that high. However, I always felt if I crossed the sub too high, I ran into sound localization issues - meaning I could hear the bass coming from the rear, which screwed up my soundstage. I don't like to be able to tell where the music is coming from. These days I never cross my sub over 80hz. I think it is even lower right now at around 70hz or so, and my subsonic is rather high at around 30hz. But man, do I get nice bass in those frequencies with my Arc Audio KS1000.1.

    The Mag is coming!

Unfortunately, only a 12" version will be made. I am contemplating on waiting for a new 15" anything by SI. I am very excited about the new technologies utilized on the new Mag, but I really only want one amazing sub, and it better be shallow(or not - no biggie) sub, which will work in small sealed enclosure. I am probably just going to look the other way, until I get my wish. I am stabborn that way, if I am set on something, that is all I want, and I want a 15" teched out to the max. I do want a new SI sub. I had one 12" ported, but I sold it when I heard new version is coming, and at that point I thought I would get a 15". Imagine my disapointment?

    New BM information

I have 1000 wrms to spare at either 2 or 1 ohm(Arc Audio KS1000.1). I initially wanted to get two new Mags, and I am very excited about the new technologies utilized. Now I am thinking, that I may not be able to push Mags properly with that power. I basicly wondering if the new BM's will have comparable SQ and output to the Mags given same power. I see that BM's will have XBL^2, but will they have a shorting ring as well? Is it possible to list the things that make the new Mag better than the new BM, as I am curuious, and this would make my decision easier. Other than more power handling, I find it hard to compare the two. I am planning to get two subs, and seal them. With this configuration, I am wondering if going with two Mags will justify the extra cost. Thanks.

Also, more of a comment, but feel free to advise if I am way off on this one. In past experience, I found that on same amp(JL 1000/1) at 1000 wrms or so, I have heard 2x12" Mags, 1x12" Mag, and 1x15" Mag - all in sealed enclosures. To me it seemed that two 12s were not much louder than one, but the one 15 was loudest. I always thought, that two subs needed more power to work to their full potential. Single 12" worked at full potential sort of speak. Single 15" worked at full potential, and 15s always have higher sensitivity, which jumped it in the lead with same power. So, that is why I wanted a 15", and that's my logic. Actually, I would like to hear your thoughts on this, Nick. Thanks.

Well, if the new Mag in a small enclosure will have the output of the current Mag in it's required big enclosure, you can count me in on the bandwagon already. I am happy with the older Mag output, and as long as can have the same performance with better SQ in a smaller box, I don't think it gets much better than that. Thanks Nick, and I can't wait to get my hands on one. I am still planning to seal it in a most appropriate size box to get full potential out of it, and give it around 1200 watts. My other option is going with two Mags in sealed box at 1000 watts. I think I am more comfortable with one Mag at 1200 though.

I have around 1200 wrms at 1 ohm at my disposal. I had my 12" Mag ported in 3 cubes at 32 hz. I ran it at 4 ohms at around 850 wrms, and it sounded sweet with plenty of output. Then I wired it to 1 ohm at around 1200 wrms, and it sounded just as sweet, but with even more output. I was very happy with the SQ and output. My question is: If I will get the soon to come out 12" Mag, seal it, and run it with the same amp, will I be able to get similar output, and at what size enclosure? My Mag was not the current version, but the one before. Thanks.

Are you going to have a Canadian dealer/distributor?

New Mags are only going to be made in 12" size? Ouch!!! I am deeply dissapointed. I have just sold my not current but a one before version 12" Mag. I have skipped one generation, and was really psyched to get the soon to be released version. All this time I had hoped a 15" will come out soon as well. What I am to do? I so badly wanted a new 15" sealed. I love the Mag, but I am supposed to look for a used current version 15"? Do I have other options? I simply dont want two 12s mainly due to weight and money, and somewhat due to enclosure size.
