    CSO / SIN - STATUS

LOL, can't help you with the banning thing there...but interesting to see it back up. Looks like it was revived back in June. I know Aaron had talked about wanting to help bring it back...surprised a little to see Laine being the one to bring it back to life. Man that place brings back some memories.....

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

My wife's rental is a fairly new Camry. Man the ride in that thing is shit. The ride in my '97 GMC 2500 is smoother. Every pebble on the road sends vibrations resonating through your entire body.

Plus the cow would have been enough to total our POS van = mo' money.

Exactly what I told her. If she had hit the cow it would go on the cow owner's insurance and no deductible to cover. But because she hit the ditch and not the cow it's thru our auto insurance and I have to pay the deductible. So that swerve cost me $500.

So wife puts our van in the ditch swerving to avoid a cow in the road on her way to work on icy roads (#ruralproblems). It's leaking fluid so I have it towed home. I park my truck on the west side of my driveway and park my car in the east bay of my garage, so naturally I use the east side of my driveway to pull into the garage. (My car only fits in that bay) I specifically tell her to have the driver put the van in the road where she usually parks so that when I get home I can put the truck in the road and the van in the driveway where the truck was parked. Get home and where is the van ? Sitting on the east side of the driveway, of course. Holy fucksticks, follow directions.

This. Also, our mod powers work just as well inside his forum as they do outside of it. Would be funny to delete his "I am GOD" post as proof that he is, in fact...not. That whole post makes him sound like he's turning into another Kevin from Skar...whining and bitching when things don't go his way rather than dealing with it. I was kind of thinking Ben Milne, but same difference I guess. . Holy shit, true story. Been so long I completely forgot about him but you are 100% correct

On a lighter note, I scored around 500lbs worth of 1" weight plates with a dozen or so dumbbell handles for $65 in a local online auction. Considering the plates alone retail around $1/lbs and the handles are around $25/pair, I think I made out pretty good on the deal. Around $800 retail worth of gear for $65...woot !
  11. If you are willing to spend $60-$80 on another pair of full range drivers, why not spend the same amount on a pair of tweeters to play with to compare full range to a tweeter? Even if you only have 4 channels to play with, replace the midbass with the tweeter for a while, readjust the crossover slopes and give it a listen? Or even go with a tweeter on a simple cap to highpass and coil to lowpass the midrange and run the, active? Or even a predesigned textbook xover from PE just to experiment with a 3-way instead of full range? Making a system that sounds listenable isn't that challenging. Get the TA set and kill a couple of the annoying peaks and most people will be happy. Especially when you have nothing to actually compare it to or don't have much experience with an actual high quality reproduction. That's where I think the fallacy is here.
  12. The fad stems from doing a 2 way. A 2 way with an FR is a huge improvement to a 2 way with a 7 & tweet. Yes lots of factors and sure a tweeter helps, but there is quite the jump from simple 2 way processing to 3.Really with some basic knowledge it shouldn't be terrible to accomplish a 3-way. You have another crossover point to select, but if one applies the logic of crossing as high as you can while avoiding the cone break-up node on the mid and cutting it off below beaming, that will work itself out rather trivially. Aside from that you set TA just like you would for any other speaker set, and then smooth the FR which will likely be far LESS of a chore with the 3-way set than trying to rangle in the FR of a full range, cone break up, beaming and all. Installation will be much more smooth as aiming of the midrange isn't all that critical and it's not hard to nail the aiming of a tweeter due to their small size. Plus you can locate the drivers in a better location than throwing the widebander on the dash and dealing with the FR issues of the associated reflections. Stick the midrange somewhere away from the a-pillar/windshield and stick the tweet in the sail panel. I really think nailing a 3-way for a novice would be far easier than a widebander
  13. Sorry, I COMPLETELY missed the "with a tweeter" part when I posted my response last night. My fault. Yes, with moderate processing and tuning and proper speaker installation a 4" to 5" mid with a tweeter would work wonderfully. Really if you cross the midrange driver below beaming as you should then the aiming of the mid isn't that important or critical...which is yet another advantage of using the tweeter on top. Plus the amount of FR smoothing and anomalies that would need to be worked out would be less with the mid/tweet combo than trying to run a driver full range.
  14. And in return you give yourself another dozen headaches to deal with that create inaccuracies in the reproduction. Poor power response, small sweet spot, worse frequency response, generally diminished top end response, aiming now becomes a major concern on the install, intentionally running the driver through the break-up region increases distortion and worsens frequency response, limited choices in driver selection, etc etc etc. There's no free lunch. The "issues" of having non-point source drivers can for the most part be dealt with electronically and with proper tuning...many of the issues that arise from using a single "full range" driver can't be fixed, electronically or otherwise. There are FAR more advantages to running a tweeter than Not. Sure, you could use a full range and get a system that sounds acceptable...does not mean it won't or couldn't sound and perform better with a tweeter Sorry, I just don't understand the whole full range fad. I fail to see one legitimate example of where it performs better on the whole. I can drive my car with only 3 tires....but it sure as hell drives better with 4.
  15. Eliminate a lot of your troubles by eliminating the "full range", run a tweeter on top like you are supposed to and then you can adjust your midrange driver to fit your FR goals with much less grief.

    External PA Speaker?

My advice would be to buy/build some external PA monitors for use at shows wired up to some quick disconnects. Will sound better, don't have to worry about water proofing them, far less ghetto, etc. Only downside would be transporting them to/from the show.

Would you pay $450 for a 30 pound Ethos?

Neo ? If the only difference were weight, and the Neo was more expensive, I think most people would opt for the less expensive option...personally. I can think of a few reasons someone might want the lighter option (using a large quantity of drivers or someone who will be removing the enclosure frequently)...but I'm not one of them, so if I were in the market for the driver the regular ferrite version is what I would go for.

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

My point was don't forget why we were there in the first place. People like to bitch about the slow recovery just so they have a reason to bitch about Obama...but forget why we were even there in the first place. People have been talking about SSI going dry for decades. Certainly Obama is not the only cause there. Was't the solution either, but most definitely not the only cause. Quick google search I couldn't find a single reference to Obama endorsing federal min wage being raised to $12. I did see several articles about a REPUBLICAN proposing to raise California's min wage to $12, and some articles about Obama giving preferential treatment to federal contractors paying at least $10.10/hour. Another case of using made up statistics ?Also, in your first post you were absolutely talking present tense. When I pointed out that the raise you were complaining about wasn't Obama's fault, now you are complaining about a future event that hasn't actually occurred yet. Makes sense, when you can't defend your complaint, just change the subject. but they aren't free, right? Which means they cost the consumer more, right? You were complaining about the cost of cars, right? So those scanners you need to replace are completely independent of the complexity of the electronics system in the vehicle ? Because it would stand to reason that the computer systems in vehicles have become increasingly complex regardless of CAFE, and that the tools (scanner, as you specifically pointed out) necessary to interact with the ever more complex electrical/computer systems would likewise become more complex and expensive. I mean, if it wasn't for CAFE manufacturer's NEVER EVER would have even switched to computer controlled cars that even needed scanners, right? Damn government ! To be honest I couldn't give two shits about Obama. Admittedly I probably lean more democrat on issues, but I'm far from an Obama supporter. I just get tired of listening to people bitch about him about shit that is either made up or not really his fault. It's just the en vogue thing to do if your a right winger...

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

most don't care about energy savings...they want to pay less for their gas each month. More fuel economy means less out of pocket. That is as much a pressure on the auto makers as gov't standards. Net ecological cost means nothing...net out of pocket cost is important. I see it every single day, I make car loans for a living. People get rid of their old gas hogs for more fuel economy. Truck guys drive around in Aveo's and shit because it uses 1/2 the fuel. I see it, daily. Then your point is that Seth's entire rant was meaningless..because the whole thing was a giant rant about left wing federal programs and specifically pointed at Obama. His "main point" question there at the end even specifically mentions Obama. He mentions federal programs several times, and specifically Obama throughout the post. If my response to his rant was irrelevant, then his ENTIRE rant was equally meaningless and maybe he should have left Obama and those federal programs you cite as meaningless OUT of his post. But he didn't, so fair game. If you are going to complain, don't make shit up. Don't bitch about SSDI tripling under Obama when it HASN't. That's what is absurd. People using bullshit statistics to try to validate their political views or to validate their dislike of some political party. The ONLY reason I even responded to that section was because his figure was a fucking LIE and WAY the hell off from the truth.

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

That shitty economy was the result of the 8 year republican reign prior to Obama... From a Google search, this appears to be FALSE. The most common number I could find was 20% increase under Obama. The number of recipients has tripled, but it has tripled since the number of recipients in 1980, not 2008 when Obama took office. They loosened the requirements to receive SSDI decades ago, long before Obama. And it's still not easy, I talk to customers every week who've hired an attorney because the gov't has denied their SSDI claims. Then that is a local/state issue, nothing to do with Obama. I see people's income for a living, and I see fast food employees weekly applying for loans. In my state they are all still at or VERY close to minimum wage which in my state hasn't risen in many, many years. If your state has seen a nearly 50% increase in their wages, then that is a state and not a federal issue. Federal minimum wage has only went up $1.40 since 2007, and hasn't increased at all since 2009 Let's not ignore the complexity of today's gadgets in those vehicles. Consumers are as much in favor of hybrids/fuel efficiency due to cost of gas as the gov't. Also, cars today are much more complex in features and systems are much more technologically advanced...when you start to add more options to every vehicle like heated fucking steering wheels, cars that park themselves, navigation, etc..CAFE standards are VERY far from the only reason new car prices have risen. Blame your fellow consumer who can't park their car without a backup camera or requires a car that will park itself or can't drive anywhere without the car telling them how to get there. As the cars get more complicated and technologically advanced the tools to fix them become equally complicated and complex which likewise makes them expensive.

Decent replacement for Sony Midbass woofer?

I thought this prv stuff was supposed to be pretty good? Our Midbass speakers will out performance almost every component set in the market specially the cheap ones, now We are talking about here a $30 speaker of couse you can get a $300 component set that will has a better performance, but on the same price level the 6MB200-4 is hard to beat Please only take in consideration review of actual customer that have owner this product We would like to support this statement with one of our authorized dealer that has been working with us for years - Please take a look on the reviews - http://www.parts-express.com/prv-audio-6mb200-6-1-2-midbass-speaker-8-ohm--294-2700#lblReviews Please take in consideration SSA also sells them on their website - they are still new with our brand so there isnt much review on our products yet but you can find them here - http://store.soundsolutionsaudio.com/search.php?search_query=6MB200 You can find all the specs that you need on our website on this speaker - http://prvaudio.com/pdf/6MB200-4_Datasheet.pdf so you can make the decision if this speaker will be the best fit for your system At the $30 price level there are plenty of competitors in the DIY driver market that will walk all over that 6MB as the mid in a 2-way comp set. Subjective reviews are pretty well meaningless and useless. However what is not meaningless is an objective observation based on the T/S parameters and other objective data, which for this driver are terrible for use as a midbass....hence a terrible choice for this gentlemen's setup and intended use. High Fs with a high Q means a sharp and early rolloff in the midbass preceded an exaggerated peak before that rolloff begins. That's just not a good design for use in a 2-way. Plenty of much more reasonable options in a similar price bracket. Of course as someone who has suggested users to run the 6" up to 12khz+ off-axis in their doors while running their midbass in mono (and rather than respond to my questioning of such a design, you delete the thread and repost it omitting the preciously mentioned terrible advice), I think it's very obvious prospective customers should be warned to approach anything you recommend with caution. BEST COMMENT - HEREThank you for your support and sharing your knowledge But depends which head unit you have, the 6MB200 handles 100rms if you have a stock units that only gives you 20 or 30RMS to the speaker you will not need a crossover for it it will take the power a full range point You do realize with that comment he was recommending the user NOT buy the PRV and instead buy a comp set, correct? He wasn't supporting PRV, he was telling the guy not to buy it.Also, terrible idea to run the driver full range on the bottom end regardless of power. But he wasn't commenting on the highpass crossover anyways, he was talking about the lowpass crossover which is absolutely needed for performance reasons.
  24. This. Play it long/hard enough to heat it up to make sure it doesn't shut down due to thermal protection.
